It was Tyler Cooper’s last chance at happiness. When he was 19 years old, Cooper’s aunt bought him a ticket, helped him pack his bags and sent him on a weeklong vacation to Florida.

Nice article! Sabin is a wonderful host and a great entertainer.

I don’t think the above posters have ever seen a drag show, or even know what they are. I’ve read persuasive criticism of drag regarding stereotypes and misogyny.

“Fake” and “Be Real,” you make want to look into that subject so you can give an informed critique of drag culture beyond that time you “seen a drag queen.”

First of all, Spiral is a dance bar and the event at Wonders Hall (MSU) was a benefit for a non-profit organization; they are definitely not strip clubs. They’re not tipping the performers because they’re taking their clothes off – they’re tipped because it takes a lot of skill and effort to do what they do and the crowd wants to show their appreciation.

I agree with Marie above: I don’t think the above posters have any idea what drag really is. In fact, I’m pretty offended by their incredibly ignorant, sexist, homophobic remarks.

To the first three posters: Life is going to be really rough (and nowhere near as fun as it should be) if you get as uncomfortable as you’ve already demonstrated by anyone who violates the status quo. When I was at MSU, I worked with a guy who also did drag. He was a smart, hilarious kid who also dressed as a woman on weekends. Big deal. It was a fun thing to talk about, at least.

Broaden your horizons. Just because you don’t like it doesn’t make it bad.

Dear Fake,

Two things. First, you didn’t SEEN a drag queen, you SAW a drag queen. While this is not truly relevant to the discussion, if you want to be taken seriously, please start by writing and speaking like an educated person.

Second, your apparent physical reaction to seeing a drag reflects your insecurities about sexuality. Do you have a similar reaction to seeing women dressed in business suits? I’m guessing not, because you don’t feel threatened by them. When one feels threatened in some way, a visceral (i.e., not intellectual) reaction is normal.

As a Christian, heterosexual man, I am sad to admit that I once reacted similarly. My solemn prayer for you is that you will learn to accept the notion that world is not as dualistic as you have been raised to believe. God bless you.

I’m pretty sure the first three posters were just one lame poster with nothing to do. Now THAT is sad.

Great article, but I think something important/interesting left out is the fact that most drag queens are heterosexual men…
