18-year-old hit by vehicle while biking

An 18-year-old Kingsley, Mich., woman reported being hit by an unknown vehicle while riding her bicycle Monday, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.

The woman was riding her red Schwinn down Red Cedar Road at about 10:15 a.m. when she was struck by the gray or silver-colored truck, McGlothian-Taylor said. She was not injured and she and the driver of the vehicle decided not to report the incident to police.

She reported the incident after being instructed to do so by her mother.

Cyclists — Anytime you’re involved in an incident with a car, always get the license number and report it to the police. Always. If you’re injured at all, talk to an attorney. Always.

When drivers know they will be 100% accountable for their actions, the world will be a much safer place for cyclists.

btw same goes for pedestrians — if something happens with you and a car, report it

Hey Ed. You sound like a Narc.
Often times cyclists do not follow traffic laws and are then to blame for these accidents.
Same Road, Same RULES. This especially means stopping at traffic lights and stop signs.

Fair enough, Ben. Both parties have the right to present their side of the story, which is another reason it’s important to file an official report.

Studies indicate that drivers are at fault about 90% of the time in car/bike accidents (link below), so it’s most often in the cyclist’s best interest — not the driver’s — to get the cops involved.

A little FYI for all you bikers: it is East Lansing law that you walk your bike across all cross walks. If you are involved in an incident where you are on your bike while in the cross walk you may not be able to sue. Keep that in mind…
