MSU community gathers in protest
Tweet
Students and faculty in the MSU Deaf Education Program, as well as members of the deaf community, will gather outside the Administration Building at 10 a.m. today in protest to a recommended moratorium on the program’s admission of students.
The recommendation, along with a proposal to discontinue all American Sign Language classes, will be sent to Academic Governance for input, according to a message sent to students enrolled in ASL courses or the teaching program obtained by The State News.
According to the messages sent by Susan Dalebout, the College of Education’s academic student affairs director and certification officer, students currently enrolled in the program and those who are admitted in the spring will be allowed to complete their program and be recommended for certification if finished by summer 2013.
Students who submitted an application this fall will be considered for admission, but would need to take part in an accelerated program to complete a modified course in order to meet all certification requirements, according to the
messages.

Yeah,,,, ummm, just a question: Isn’t sign language something that you generally learn in highschool, or before, if it’s something that interests you? It’s a well known fact that kids pick up on it MUCH quicker than adults. Is it possible that they are discontinuing it for a reason similar to that? I don’t see any enrollment data here…

@ lol.
really? Apparently you felt the need to express your delusional ignorance..for an MSU program. Sign language as well as other languages are taught in high school, but is it fair to say that we shouldnt teach spanish, german, or any other language for that reason as well?
It’s a well known fact that many college students and graduates can’t think on higher levels of critical analysis. Its unfortunate that you are a statistic.

@lol
I’m from a small town where Sign Language isn’t offered at the High School level, only Spanish. I came to Michigan State for opportunities like this. Not everyone comes from a privileged community where sign language is offered, or additional languages.

Every major at the university is important to someone, so these types of protests are inevitable. I’m wondering if the process of cutting programs could be made more palatable if the university would tell us the criteria they are using to make these decisions. Is a program excessively expensive to teach? Is there a very low student-to-faculty ratio? Perhaps the faculty is under-performing and unwilling to change?
It seems these difficult discussions would benefit from simple disclosure by the university administration.

Pick your battles people, those graduates can’t find any jobs as it is. Consider it a service that the college directs you into more employable majors instead of gleefully taking your federal loans for a worthless degree.

Your comment is assuming that ‘worth’ is determined by income or the potential of income. There are some of us that pursue an education not for the potential job, but rather for the knowledge and the core education.
Some of us dont just go to school to get a job. We instead, actually enjoy learning and advancing ourselves beyond what is considered ‘worthwhile’ at this time.

You’re reasoning is nice and all, but your time would be better spent learning your future trade, latte making.

I appreciate your concern. Notice I used your, as you have ownership of the concern. It’s similar, much similar to the reasoning that I have ownership over.
So before I go asking you if you want cream or sugar, could you please use proper grammar if you’re going to insult me. Thanks :)

I think that Radiohost and Re: Radio Host are going to get together, much like Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in “You Got Mail!” Anyone else seeing the romance between the lines?

Actually, according the the chief administrator of the Michigan School for the Deaf (who spoke at the rally by the way) there is a great need for instructors who use sign language—they currently have three positions that they cannot fill for want of qualified individuals. That is at one school—there are hundreds of schools in Michigan that service Deaf and Hard of Hearing students.
The truth is, this program is needed and graduates are prepared for an education and a workforce (and children) that needs them.

Yeah, you should probably just stick to being one of those obnoxious radio hosts, I don’t think there’s much future for you in any other field (not that hosting radio is much of a future, l o l).
I asked a question, and you raged. You also used nonexistent data to come up with a ridiculous theory about my mental reasoning capabilities. You’re an idiot! I definitely have enough data to say that :)
