Texas Tech coach fired before MSU bowl game

December 30, 2009

Texas Tech will play MSU in the Valero Alamo Bowl on Saturday without head coach Mike Leach, who was fired Wednesday amid allegations that he mistreated a wide receiver with a concussion, the Associated Press reported.

Earlier this week, Texas Tech officials suspended Leach for the bowl game pending an investigation into claims by wide receiver Adam James that Leach confined him to a small, dark room twice after he was diagnosed with a concussion. The AP reported James’ account of the alleged mistreatment.

Following the suspension, Leach filed a restraining order that would
permit him to coach in the bowl game, the AP reported.

But prior to a court hearing Wednesday regarding the restraining order, Leach’s lawyer was given a letter from the university that
said Leach was “terminated with cause effective immediately,” the AP reported.

Leach’s firing is yet another storyline for the Alamo Bowl. The Spartans will be without 14 players who were either suspended for the game or dismissed from the team following a fight last month at Rather Hall.

The Spartans and Red Raiders play at 9 p.m. Saturday.
