Transition coming quickly in South Bend

December 7, 2009

Notre Dame already has been looking for a new football coach, and now the Fighting Irish also are looking for a new quarterback and wide receiver.

Both junior quarterback Jimmy Clausen and junior wide receiver Golden Tate announced Monday they will forego their senior seasons and enter the 2010 NFL Draft, ESPN.com reported.

A three-year starter, Clausen threw for 3,722 yards and 28 touchdowns, completing 68 percent of his passes and throwing just four interceptions.

Fifteen of his touchdowns went to Tate, who finished this season with 93 receptions and 1,496 yards.

In other Notre Dame news, according to an ESPN.com report, Cincinnati head football coach Brian Kelly will interview with Notre Dame today for its head coaching vacancy.

Kelly is in his third full season at Cincinnati after spending three seasons at Central Michigan and 13 at Division 2 Grand Valley State. This season, he led the Bearcats to a perfect 12-0 record, earning the No. 4 Bearcats a Sugar Bowl berth against No. 5 Florida on Jan. 1, 2010.

Since the Fighting Irish fired former head coach Charlie Weis on Nov. 30, Kelly has been rumored to be one of the school’s top choices.

The New York Times also reported that Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh was a possible interview candidate for the job. Harbaugh played at Michigan from 1983-86.
