City Center II developer pays city taxes

By Zack Colman Originally Published: 01/26/10 5:30pm Modified: 01/27/10 9:41am 7 comments

Strathmore Development Co., the developer in charge of the City Center II project, paid the entirety of its outstanding city taxes Tuesday.

With the nearly $96,000 ledger erased with the city, Strathmore’s amended site plan will be considered by the East Lansing Planning Commission at its Feb. 24 meeting. The city had previously notified Strathmore owner Scott Chappelle that it would not consider any changes to the project until all city taxes were paid.

The project’s site plan and special use permit expired Dec. 17 when it failed to meet a city-imposed deadline.

East Lansing Mayor Vic Loomis was guarded about what the recent action might mean.

“He paid his taxes. I don’t see this as a big deal,” he said. “Currently he’s paid his taxes. I don’t think there’s much of a story here but maybe there is.”

Phonies?

Funny to see two brief comments from enthusiasts for City Center II, since almost everyone outside city hall thinks it is a crock. I’m guess some insider doing a fifth rate attempt to fake opinion—sort of thing you can do without saying who you are, like this message. Maybe I’m wrong, but these folks are pretty desperate.

Loomis’ newfound caution is, of course, phony. He and Staton are responsible for City Center II and its failure. The time to be cautious was when they were warned about it by people who are a lot smarter than they are (who did not have conflicts of interest and contempt for citizens) and before they committed East Lansing taxpayers to a project that was entirely dependent on taxpayer subsidies and irresponsible lending.

I think we can all agree something has to replace the corner where CC2 is being proposed-prlly not the best plan but it has to be better than the bank building now-def more creative ways the council can create a viable downtown el tho

I too despise anonymous comments and all who write them. I think, Phonies, that you should run for city council on a platform of nothing other than hatred for the City Center II project. Though with a name like “phonies” it may be difficult.

DID HE PAY HIS PROPERTY TAXES WITH A VISA CARD AGAIN?

The County Treasurer once remarked that Strathmore had a unique history of paying their property taxes with a credit card, a sure sign that they do not even have enough liquidity to cover fixed expenses, let alone a major housing project. Where is the reporting?
