MSU, WJR continue radio agreement

A deal completed Tuesday by MSU and Detroit radio station WJR (760-AM) would continue to give the station exclusive radio broadcast rights to MSU athletics until 2020, a university official said.

MSU and WJR have held a broadcast agreement since 2006 that was set to expire next year, and chose to extend the agreement for another 10 years, said Mark Hollis, MSU’s athletics director.

“They’re the great voice of the Great Lakes (and) I consider us to be the university of the state of Michigan,” Hollis said. “If you take those two components, we’re both striving to make this a better place to live for the people that are from the state of Michigan.”

WJR would maintain the rights to athletics such as basketball and football, and MSU would be able to continue to promote the university around the state, Hollis said.

“It extends beyond the broadcast football and basketball,” Hollis said. “The relationship is very much used from the university’s perspective as an outreach source into Southeast Michigan for things like admissions, the alumni association, development and a lot of the academic areas.”
