Drake scheduled to perform on campus

Up-and-coming Canadian rapper Drake is scheduled to perform at MSU in April, although details about the rapper’s performance remain uncertain.

Tour dates for Drake’s The Away from Home Tour indicate the rapper is scheduled to perform at MSU on April 14. His Web site does not specify a venue.

Bob Hoffman, communications director of MSU’s Performing Arts Facilities and Programs, said he had no record of Drake being booked at the Auditorium, Wharton Center or Fairchild Theatre.

Breslin Center staff said they could not confirm whether Drake is scheduled to perform; however, according to Breslin Center’s event calendar, country singer Carrie Underwood is scheduled to perform April 14.

Hoffman did say, however, that ASMSU has booked the Auditorium for April 14.

ASMSU is MSU’s undergraduate student government.

Eric Branoff, Student
Assembly vice chairperson for external affairs, confirmed ASMSU has booked the Auditorium for that date; however, he could not confirm whether Drake was the artist scheduled to perform.

“We’re in a process of working on a contract with the artist we’re bringing,” Branoff said. “We are bringing an artist on (April 14) but I can’t confirm who.”

Branoff said ASMSU is finalizing plans in the next two weeks. Tickets currently are not listed for sale on ticket vendor Web sites.

Drake’s tour starts April 9 and runs until May 8, according to the rapper’s Web site.

Drake will visit 12 universities with opening acts Canadian rapper/singer K-OS and New York synth-pop group Francis and the Lights. Additional dates have yet to be confirmed.

The tour’s sponsor, Reverb, said Drake’s tour is part of the Campus Consciousness Tour that promotes environmentally friendly concert tours on college campuses.

Reverb spokeswoman Amy Makowiecki said the company sponsors a few artists each year, and will sponsor Drake’s tour and singer Ben Harper’s tour this spring.

The company creates a “green tour” for the artist, as well as providing onsite environmental information for concertgoers, Makowiecki said.

“Generally artists have been coming to us for the greening that we do,” Makowiecki said. “They’re really excited to learn how they can have less of an environmental impact.”

Premedical sophomore Leslie Rabaut said she is a fan of Drake and plans to purchase tickets for the show once they go on sale.

“I am definitely going to get tickets,” she said. “I am really excited. He is up and coming and people really like his songs. It will be a really good concert.”

Wow. Way to stereotype Canadian hip hop. If you actually listened to hip hop then you would realize that there are many talented Canadian rappers like Drake, Kardinal Offishall, Classified, and K-OS, to name a few, that are all completely different and nothing like 90s “rapper” Snow. And if you haven’t heard of Drake then you clearly NEVER listen to hip hop because he is the biggest up-and-comer in rap right now. Oh, and he was nominated for two Grammys before he even has released his first studio album. No big deal or anything, though.

I f’ing love Drake – the most unique rapper out there possible – a Canadian Black Jew – and I think he’s going to be hugely successful, and will be one of the first there to try and grab a great ticket. Very glad ASMSU is putting this together. However, with all that said, a great majority of his best verses on songs come on being combined with Lil Wayne and Young Money ent. (Bedrock, Money to Blow, etc.) There are others (The Winner, Best I ever had) that will be dope in concert but I’m a little worried if he doesnt have Young Money

drake is dope though. i would have to imagine that live his shows are not that great. saw Kid Cudi last month, and most rapper/hook singer’s music doesnt translate well live.

All I hear Drake rap about is Womanizing or how hes at the top of the rap scene. To me thats not what hip hop is about. yea he has some dope songs but there are many more important issues to deal with other than women and yourself.
