Susan J. Bandes, director of Kresge Art Museum, will step down from the position May 1, according to a statement from MSU.

Bandes is expected to pursue teaching at MSU while she remains a full-time professor for the Department of Art and Art History.

Bandes could not be reached for comment Wednesday night.

When she began her career at MSU in 1986, Bandes helped develop grant writing, fundraising and interdisciplinary programming.

Bandes brought many exhibitions to the museum during her time as director and maintained a partnership with different study programs and colleges across campus, according to the statement.
She also served as co-director of the Museum Studies Program.

Bandes received acclaim for her exhibit of Baroque paintings from the Detroit Institute of Arts. An exhibit on Frank Lloyd Wright’s Goetsch Winkler house in Okemos in 1990 brought national attention, which will be the subject of her new research assignment.

Before coming to MSU, Bandes received a Bachelor of Arts from New York University. She worked at the American Association of Museums and Sweet Briar College after she attended Bryn Mawr College for her Master of Arts and doctorate, according to the statement.

MSU spokeswoman Lisa Mulcrone said the university will soon begin looking for a director for the future Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum. She was unable to comment on filling Bandes’ position.
