Violence against women must be fought all over

Originally Published: 02/14/10 6:24pm Modified: 02/14/10 6:27pm 8 comments

The column Our culture must combat injustices (SN 2/11) concerning a Turkish man killing his daughter over her talking to a boy suggests that domestic violence is a problem that women in America don’t face. The author comments on the girl’s killing with “Many might automatically jump to the conclusion of specific religions being the primary reason for such injustices. It isn’t always about religion, but rather ignorance.”

Rather, domestic abuse and violence against women is an affliction that women of all religions, be it Islam or Christianity, face in all its forms. The examples given of a Turkish girl being the victim of an honor killing and an American girl facing abuse in the form of her being besmirched on a bathroom wall as a “huge skank” distort the universal struggle women have against violence, whether it occurs in Turkey, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Germany or East Lansing.

Surely you’re not equating the murder of a 16-year-old with being called a skank by a jealous drunk?

The first is systematic murder supported by an archaic belief system. The second is playground name-calling easily handled by a thick skin.

The way women are treated as second-class beings in the middle east is appalling. To suggest that women in America are treated similarly here is lunacy. Sure, there is the odd megadouche who abuses or assaults a woman, but there is no religious defense here – just jail and hopefully a nice black blanket welcome.

The article which is being written about here could have almost been two seperate articles. I believe that the horror shown in other countries, against woman was done to help us appreciate how well we have it as women in this country. Overall, I feel American woman are treated extremely well in America. We are given all sorts of rights and priviledges. Yes, there are woman who suffer domestic abuse, but I believe that that it is a seldom occurance. I also feel we should do what ever we can to help these women. On the most part, I feel that the men in American are very repectful of woman and are rather protective. The horror that Medine Memi, a 16-year-old girl from Kahta, went through is unspeakable. But to compare her culture with ours is like day and night. Let’s see what we can do to help: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=international women rights&aq=f&aqi=g3g-m1&oq= (thanks to the person who gave me these sites).
And then let us thank God, that we live in such a wonderful country with such honorable men.
God Bless.

Does anyone else love the terrible choice in words for the title as much as I do?

I have to say I do agree with your post. It is as if the title is half written and kind of obscure.
