A man allegedly connected to a sexual assault at MSU in February has been apprehended in Illinois, MSU police said.

Montague Stanford, 40, of Naperville, Ill., is awaiting formal charges from the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office for an alleged sexual assault of a female MSU student on MSU’s campus in late February.

Naperville is located about 30 miles west of Chicago and 248 miles west of East Lansing.

MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said Stanford allegedly sexually assaulted a 22-year-old female MSU student between Feb. 27 and 28 on campus at her residence.

McGlothian-Taylor said the man had contacted the woman via Internet prior to coming to MSU and came to meet with her in her room on campus. Currently, Stanford faces charges of being a fugitive of justice and currently is in jail in Illinois with a $10,000 bond, Naperville police said.

Stanford left East Lansing before any formal charges were made with the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office, McGlothian-Taylor said. Naperville police Cmdr. Mike Anders said MSU police contacted his department about the warrant for Stanford’s arrest and requested assistance. The police arrived at Stanford’s home in Naperville on March 5 and he currently is in an Illinois jail, Anders said.

A representative from Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office said there are no court records of Stanford filed and he has yet to be arraigned. According to court records, Stanford is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in the DuPage County Circuit Court in Wheaton, Ill., on the fugitive from justice charge.

It is unclear when he is expected to return to East Lansing to face charges for the alleged sexual assault, a representative from the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office said.

McGlothian-Taylor said the man had contacted the woman via Internet prior to coming to MSU and came to meet with her in her room on campus.

Stupid.
If convicted, lock the guy up.
But the “victim” here needs to take a long hard look at her own actions.

My kids have more sense than this.

Why would a 20 some year old MSU student want to meet a 40 year old man? Not good. The Internet can bring all kinds of garbage into your life, be careful. Study that is what is at this time of your life, leave the garbage behind. important.

Shame on you for adding more pain to a girl that is already hurting! A victim is a victim—no one has the right to commit such a crime. And the victim needs nothing now but understanding and sympathy—not your judgment!

Jenny,
It does not appear that this girl is 100% blame-free.

Sorry ‘bout that, but inviting strange men over the internet is a recipe for disaster and this case proves it. You cannot decouple her actions from the alleged assault. If she had not contacted and invited this man, the assault would not have happened.

She can get all the “understanding and sympathy” from her friends and family, but the rest of us need to draw a lesson from this.

Need we be reminded that supposedly in this country we are innocent until proven guilty. It is so typical that when a report like this is made people jump to a conclusion. Lets hear the evidence and let it be tried in court by a jury of peers not by hearsay and innuendos. Let justice be served in court of law and not on the streets of Michigan or Illinois.

I noticed that myself, he most definetly has some interesting features. I would have to believe that is why he resorted to the Internet and went after someone half is age, best he could do I guess. He made his date his victim. Be careful who you meet on the Internet people!

I think that some comments are very unfair. Although the victim invited this man to her residence, it doesn’t mean she asked to be raped. Did you ever hear of the word naive? I think niave best describes this victim.

“Naive” must be another word for stupid. She’s lucky to be alive.

And, yes, inviting strange men over the internet is asking to be raped.

As much as I feel bad for the victim, there’s a part of me that thinks he was invited over to the campus. By no means do condone this behavior, but it seems like a “he said, she said” situation here.

I don’t think we’ll ever know the truth, but I hope Mr. Stanford learned his lesson.
