DeHaan, Keane earn Big Ten honors

Four members of the MSU women’s basketball team were honored by the Big Ten on Monday, led by senior center Allyssa DeHaan as the league’s Defensive Player of the Year and junior forward Kalisha Keane as the conference’s Sixth Player of the Year.

Both DeHaan and Keane are the first Spartans to earn their respective awards in program history.

DeHaan led the team with 11.6 points per game this season and was second on the team with 6.1 rebounds per game. Her 97 total blocks led the conference.

It also marked DeHaan’s fourth straight year on the All-Defensive Team.

Keane finished second on the team in scoring, averaging 9.9 points per game. She also chipped in four rebounds, 2.55 assists and 1.79 steals per game, coming off the bench in 23 of the team’s 29 games this season.

DeHaan also was named Second Team All-Big Ten by both the coaches and media, while Keane was a third team selection by the coaches and an honorable mention from the media.

Sophomore forward Lykendra Johnson and junior guard Brittney Thomas also were honored. Johnson was named Third-Team All-Big Ten by the coaches and honorable mention by the media, while Thomas was given honorable mention by both the coaches and media.

Ohio State center Jantel Lavender was named the Big Ten Player of the Year for the third straight season by both the coaches and media. Joining her on the coaches’ first team is Ohio State guard Samantha Prahalis, Illinois center Jenna Smith, Iowa guard Kachine Alexander and Penn State guard Tyra Grant. The media replaced Alexander with Northwestern center Amy Jaeschke.

Wisconsin’s Lisa Stone was named the league’s Coach of the Year by the coaches. Iowa’s Lisa Bluder picked up the honor from the media.

Iowa guard Jamie Printy was named the Big Ten’s Freshman of the Year by both the coaches and media.

Senior center Lauren Aitch was named the team’s Sportsmanship Award winner.
