Here are the basics on the teams the MSU men’s and women’s basketball teams could play in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Potential men’s opponents

Maryland Terrapins

How they got here The Terrapins tied with Duke for first in the ACC with a 13-3 record but bowed out in the first round of the ACC Tournament to Georgia Tech.

NCAA Tournament history Maryland has made 23 NCAA Tournament appearances, compiling a 37-22 record, making two Final Fours and winning one national championship (2002).

Who to watch Guard Greivis Vasquez averages 19.5 points per game and leads the team with 6.25 assists per game. He also is the team’s third leading rebounder at 4.6 per game.

Houston Cougars

How they got here The Cougars won the Conference-USA Tournament to earn an automatic berth.

NCAA Tournament history Houston has made 18 NCAA Tournament appearances and have made five Final Four appearances. This is their first tournament appearance since 1992.

Who to watch Guard Aubrey Coleman leads the nation in scoring at 25.6 points per game.

Potential women’s opponents

Kentucky Wildcats

Record 25-7 (11-5 SEC)

Head coach Matthew Mitchell (58-39 career)

How they got here Kentucky finished fourth in the SEC and lost to eventual conference champion Tennessee in the tournament.

NCAA Tournament history Kentucky is 4-6 all-time in the tournament, with its last appearance in 2006.

Who to watch Junior forward Victoria Dunlap was named SEC player of the Year and averages 17.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per game.

Liberty Flames

Record 27-5 (14-2 SEC)

Head coach Carey Green (264-82 career)

How they got here Liberty is riding a 10-game winning streak and won the Big South Conference tournament.

NCAA Tournament history Liberty’s first NCAA appearance was in 1996-97. The Flames lost in the first round last season.

Who to watch Sophomore Avery Warley is a first-team All-Big South player and averages 11.3 points per game while leading the conference in field goal percentage at .596.
