Conan O'Brien adds MSU to tour dates

April 15, 2010

“CoCo” is making the rounds — with a stop to MSU scheduled toward the end of May.

Former “Tonight Show” host Conan O’Brien will perform The Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television Tour on May 21 at MSU, ASMSU officials announced Thursday.

ASMSU is MSU’s undergraduate student government.

Eric Branoff, Student Assembly vice chairperson for external affairs, said although final ticket prices have not been set, officials are considering charging $15 for students and $25 for the public.

There also will be a three-day student presale prior to the performance. An exact location and time have yet to be set.

“The majority of the students will benefit from this when considering the ticket prices and the student presale,” Branoff said.

ASMSU’s Student Assembly approved a bill by a vote of 22-9-1 during its Feb. 25 meeting to allocate funds for the event, Branoff said.

Assembly members specified to spend no more than $225,000 on O’Brien’s appearance. If O’Brien declined the contract, the money would not have been spent on another performer.

When the show was announced Thursday afternoon, “Team CoCo” fans were excited to hear about his upcoming performance at MSU.

“I really like how self-depreciating he is actually,” English and global and area studies senior Alex Albers said. “The whole bit with the Swedish president was hilarious.”

For chemical engineering junior Rob Halase, the show’s timing does not fit in his schedule.

“I would like to go, but I would not be (on campus),” Halase said. “I’ve been a Conan fan for a long time, and I think he’s been the funniest of all the ‘Tonight Show’ hosts.”

The performance comes 12 days after MSU commencements and two weeks after finals week.

“(With) the issues regarding him not coming during the school year, it is still May and students will be here,” ASMSU spokesperson Portia McKenzie said. “Students are the priority when it comes down to something like this.”

Branoff said the May 21 date was the only time officials would be able to secure the comedian’s performance at MSU.
O’Brien announced Monday he would make yet another television debut in November on the TBS cable network. His national tour opened April 14 in Eugene, Ore.

“From what I’ve been hearing from reviews, it’s a hilarious show,” Branoff said. “It’ll be a really good time to wrap up the year, to hang out and go to see the show.”
