Summers

Junior guard Durrell Summers will return for his senior season, MSU head coach Tom Izzo reportedly told The Associated Press on Friday.

Summers joins fellow junior Kalin Lucas in forgoing the NBA Draft to return for a final season. Lucas’ father, Ken Lucas, told The State News earlier this week that his son’s ruptured Achilles’ tendon contributed to his decision to come back.

Izzo said he offered to gauge the NBA Draft stock of Summers and Lucas, but both decided against declaring, according to the AP.

“I think my guys were good enough to go and could’ve put their names in like everybody else,” Izzo told the AP. “Even though I offered to do some checking for them, they had their mind [made] up to come back. I think it’s neat that they made educated, mature decisions.”

After seeing the way Tyrant Tom treats Summers like a field worker, I am shocked that Durrell is going to risk his body and put up with another year of this crap. Man, the whole point of college is to be done with it and get paid. The fans aren’t risking their bodies lke you do. That’s just neat, as Izzo says, that he owns your butt for another year.

I wasn’t surprised to see a dumb comment similar to what was posted in response to the Lucas news article. Glad to see the poster knows how to use cut and paste.

Just like it is unfair for fans to criticize a player for leaving early, it is equally unfair to criticize him for staying. This is a personal decision for the player.

I suggest poster contact Lucas and Summers directly and let them know how stupid they are for staying. If they don’t first kick your a** maybe they’ll be interested in knowing why you are so much smarter than the other people they consulted.

Kalin couldn't chase anyone down; Summers is next.

He’s right: those guys could be getting paid millions. Now Kalin’s career is done; you never get that quickness back after an Achilles rupture.

Actually ...

“never” [get that quickness back …] is a misstatement. While success after Achilles surgery/rehab is not guaranteed, there are plenty of medical literature/studies showing where it has been successful.

I also find it interesting folks are arguing that players risk injury (and millions) by staying in school for another season. By that argument, superstar players coming out of high school should sit out freshman year and wait to get drafted when they become eligible. (We can argue the issue of whether the one-year waiting period is right or not at a later time.)

We don’t know what’s in the players’ heads as it relates to their decisions, but it’s possible they are thinking about the money — and recognizing the fact that an additional year of play would optimize their value, even when considering the possibility of injury.

Regardless, as the prior post noted, it is the player’s decision and not ours, so what we think doesn’t really matter.

Achilles Injury: not quick enough for NBA.

To call an achilles tendon repair a success for 99.9 percent of us means that it functions without too much pain. You will NEVER have the same quickness after an achilles rupture. You lose that half second of quickness on your first step, and on defense, and that makes the difference between a great college player versus an okay NBA player. Now ROE just had knee surgery too. Raymar had problems, and he has never been the same. Kalin is TOAST. Summers is next. That dude is right: Durrell coulda gotta PAID! He is sacrificing his body for what? IZZO? Izzo treats Summers like a field worker.

For all the goobers who think they know anything about injuries – you’re basing all this on what would happen if YOU blew YOUR achilles tendon.

I don’t know if you noticed or not, but Kalin is not your average person. Elite athletes routinely defy medical doomsday predictions because they are not like normal people.

Doctors are trained to operate on normal people – that’s who 99% of their patients are. And normal people nowadays are overweight, sedentary, and couldn’t dunk a basketball if they had a 6’ ladder. Kalin will be just fine. He’ll tell you himself that he’s learning how to be a smarter player – so he doesn’t HAVE to rely on blinding speed, even though he’ll probably still have it.

Remember when Jordan came back from retirement and everyone thought he’d be too old and too slow and they found out that he was still a stud, just a different stud?

And on Durrell – the reason Coach Izzo beats on him so hard is precisely what you saw in the tournament. Durrell is capable of 20 points and 10 rebounds a game. As soon as he figures out how to do that every night, he’ll be a first round pick. Until then, he won’t be. THAT’S why Izzo rides him. Summers will owe Izzo millions and millions of dollars…

That's right; it's about the money!

Appreciate the comments. So you compared Kalin to Michael Jordan—a star who got all of the refs calls to go his way—and who never ruptured his achilles. Then you suggest that Summers will owe Izzo millions of dollars? So what about the other 99% of college basketball players who are a half step too slow to play in the NBA? Do they owe their coaches millions? The players FILL the arenas, sacrifice their bodies, and play the game. They are paid nothing. For the elite, more so at MSU, they are very likely to suffer a major injury that will hinder them by that slight amount that prevents them from being a good NBA player. Jason Richardson and Zach Randolph were smart. Izzo treats Summers like crap. I do not see that changing. Kalin sits on the bench, and Appling starts along with Lucious. Unless one of them pulls a Mateen Cleaves this summer and gets busted for Drunk Driving. Typical. Criminal. Driving Drunk is attempted murder.

Agree ... and disagree

I agree with the prior poster regarding the foolishness in asserting the players owe their school or coach anything. The school makes gobs of money off its players. If a player chooses to do anything, like Steve Smith has, they have my respect.

I disagree with the assertion regarding injuries at MSU. The writer ignores the fact that injuries seemed to be more common this year, but they weren’t confined to MSU. I suppose Turner’s (OSU) back, Hummel’s (PU) ACL, and Butler’s (WV) ACL were Izzo’s fault as well? (and this is only a small part of the list).

The writer also asserts that Randolph and Richardson were smart to opt out early. He (or she) is correct. They captured their value at the right time, and additional time in school probably would not have changed things for them. However, to insinuate that they left because of Izzo is not accurate. I haven’t seen much commentary from Randolph but you don’t have to look far to see Richardson’s comments that are highly complementary to Izzo.

The poster is also correct that Lucas and Summers are foregoing $$$ by not going pro now. However, that is equivalent to saying that MSU students are foregoing $ by going for their degree. This is true, as students are making a calculated decision that getting a degree instead of taking a job right out of high school will optimize their career earnings. Maybe Lucas and Summers are using similar logic.

Comparing Apples to Oranges

Great points! However, comparing most MSU students to potential multi millionaire future NBA players is a joke. The whole point of college for a player like Appling is to get some exposure and go pro ASAP. The value of an MSU bachelors degree is a function of what you major in: nursing, engineering, and a few others. These hoops
players are majoring in FLUFF, so is that degree valuable,
when they risk an injury and could lose the opportunity to
make millions in the NBA?
