MSU junior quarterback Kirk Cousins has been named as the 14th quarterback to be put on the Manning Award Watch List for the upcoming season, the Allstate Sugar Bowl announced Monday.
The award, started in 2004 to honor the college careers of Archie Manning and his sons Eli and Peyton, goes to the best quarterback in the country at the end of each season. The award is the only of its kind to take players’ bowl game performances into consideration when deciding the winner.
Players named to the Watch List are being announced one day at a time by the Allstate Sugar Bowl on its Facebook and Twitter pages. The award is not limited to players on the Watch List, but on Nov. 29, the list will be cut down to 10 finalists. The winner will be selected Jan. 19, after all bowl games have been played, and honored at a ceremony in New Orleans.
Cousins, who became the second sophomore captain in MSU football history last season, already has been nominated for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, which awards community service.
Last season, Cousins was the third-most efficient quarterback in the Big Ten and 25th in the country with a rating of 142.6. He threw for 2,680 yards and 19 touchdowns compared to nine interceptions.
