Athletic officials have yet to comment on how junior guard Korie Lucious’ pleading guilty to one count of reckless driving will affect his standing on the MSU men’s basketball team.

Lucious pleaded guilty to one count of reckless driving on Thursday in East Lansing’s 54-B District Court. The charge was reduced from one count of operating while intoxicated, or drunken driving. Both are misdemeanor charges.

Lucious’ attorney, Brian Jeffries, and Assistant East Lansing City Attorney, David Meyers, were unavailable for comment Monday on why the charge had been reduced.

The athletic department released a statement regarding the incident from MSU men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo on Friday.
“I am disappointed in Korie, and Korie’s disappointed in himself,” Izzo said in the statement.

“We look forward to moving past this.”

MSU Athletic Department officials declined to comment further.

The maximum penalty for Lucious’ charge is 93 days in jail and a $500 fine, according to the city of East Lansing’s website. Court records state Lucious also must comply with any program set forth by the MSU Athletic Department. Officials from the department declined to comment on what the program might entail.

Lucious is next scheduled to appear in court Dec. 20 for sentencing.

According to a copy of the ticket issued to Lucious, his blood alcohol content was 0.09 when he was pulled over in a red 2002 Buick near Charles and Linden streets at about 2:20 a.m. Aug. 30 . The legal limit is 0.08.

Lucious will not turn 21 until Nov. 5.

Lucious, a Milwaukee native, averaged 5.6 points and 3.2 assists in 36 games last season.

When then-junior guard Kalin Lucas went down with a ruptured Achilles’ tendon in the NCAA Tournament, then-sophomore Lucious filled in as point guard and led the team to the Final Four.

**Many everyday substances we normally consume have alcohol in them or they break down in the body and have a small amount of alcohol in the breakdown.

any average joe driving .07 over the legal limit would not have their charge reduced to reckless driving. this was not just glasses of wine with dinner. it was 2:20 am. justice is not blind.

Must be nice to be a basketball player at MSU. Don’t have to go to classes – check. Don’t have to pay for my degree – check. Have my drunk driving charges reduced – check. Life is good.

Many first time offenders have charges dropped or reduced – especially in liberal Ingham County.

You just seem to think that it only happens to basketball players because that’s only what you have heard about. The court room is open for all to witness the plea deals agreed to by the prosecution and defense.

This WASN’T because he’s on the MSU basketball team.

Agreed, it is very common for drunk driving charges to be reduced to lesser charges in East Lansing.
