Fans should remain for the duration of football games
Tweet
We are deeply concerned about the lack of support shown for the Spartan football team in the season opener against Western Michigan when almost the entire student section disappeared before the end of the game.
This is a continuing problem, as it is status quo for many home games. We applaud those who stay to celebrate with the team by singing the MSU Fight Song in front of the student section at the completion of the game.
The student-athletes on MSU’s football team put in long hours preparing for a successful season, along with taking classes and dealing with all of the other issues of being a college student.
We think the least we can do for them is to stay until the end — win or lose — and support them with our presence and our singing of the school Fight Song. Is that too great of a sacrifice to make?
Hey, student section, show your Spartan pride and stay until the end of the game and help reward these players for their hard work.

Kind sir, you are mistaken. We’ve done ‘the least we can do’ before kickoff. We’ve paid 10-2 prices for a 7-5 team.
The good thing about paying for your ticket is the ability to leave when you please. Just like any customer, I’m free to do whatever I please with the product I purchased, as long as I don’t break any rules. Leaving early isn’t against the rules.
And honestly, there wasn’t much to celebrate about the Western game. It was a sloppy, sloppy game. If the program wants me to go the extra mile and stay to the end, maybe they should deliver me a product more worthy of my $500/seat Spartan Fund Face price tickets.

Did you even see the 4th quarter of the WMU game? It was awful. The only reason I stayed was because I fell asleep.

The letter writers claim that because the football players put in long hours of practice on top of classes and other aspects of being a student, we owe them our presence and support for the entire game, regardless of how the game is going. Based on this, I have to assume that the letter writers show up at all MSU sporting events, for every team, and stay to the end. After all, all of our student athletes “put in long hours preparing for a successful season, along with taking classes and dealing with all of the other issues of being a college student.” If the letter writers do not go to all games for all sports, why are those student athletes less deserving of our support. Do the women’s basketball or men’s soccer players work less hard than the football team? If they are going to claim that MSU students owe something to the football players, then they should make that claim for all MSU student athletes.

Hope and Paula mean business. They are not concerned but “deeply” concerned about the lack of support. What will Paula and Hope’s next complaint column be about? The ND game being too crowded? Restroom lines? The new jerseys? The defensive secondary or lack thereof? Coach Nadruzzi’s blitz packages? Treadwell’s playbook? Coach Dantonio’s sideline outfits? The weather at gametime? The new green? The temperature of the hot chocolate? I’ll be waiting patiently for next weeks insightful column.

Wow – are you way off the mark with this opinion.
What you should have stated is that the students should actually get to the game for the start of the game…..nothing more embarrasing than seeing a 1/2 full student section after kickoff (well that and the whole “First down Bitch! thing)

First off let me say I am one of the students who left the game before it was over. But for the 3 full quarters I was there I cheered for every good play and screamed and yelled every play we were on defense.
I don’t want to hear it from some alumni that probably sat on their hands all game. I wonder if Hope and Paula are going to the FAU game, I wonder if they’re going to write another letter after only 15,000 people show up…
I understand their frustration, really I do but this was the Western game, the 4th quarter was boring anyway, and as previous readers have stated this is America people can and will do whatever they want.

I am deeply concerned with the mental health of every person who has commented on this letter. I think that the Parkers raise quite a good point, but then again, I am biased. I attend a REAL football school where we have REAL fans. You all make yourselves sound like a bunch of fair weather fans. It doesn’t matter if it was “just the Western game” school pride should be strong regardless of the opponent. I was at the game at MSU last weekend visiting as a possible grad school option. My friends and I spent much of the game laughing our asses off at the sad state of the MSU fan base. I guess MSU students and fans simply do not care about their school or have any pride at all. After seeing how lame MSU fans truly are, my mind was made up that I will never attend an institution with such a sad athletic atmosphere. You should all take what the Parkers are saying into serious consideration. Maybe get out and see how real football fans do it, or you will always remain the loser fan base that you so clearly are.

Basing your graduate school decision on the athletic department of a school. Sounds like a winning plan. I am sure you will go far in life with wise decision making like that.

Four years spent at MSU (I was a Sophomore when a certain coach left for LSU…), ZERO games attended. I guess I don’t support the team?

tiffany, you spent the game laughing your ass of at the lame fan base? And you call me a fair weather fan? Sorry I go to games to watch football not people watch, can you even name half of your REAL team’s roster? Don’t troll on the state news site trying to put down a fan base that has consistently had top 20 attendance year after year. Glad you aren’t going to state, stay classy and keep writing in CAPS to make a point… IDIOT

If your school’s athletic department is so wonderful, and it is so important to you, why are you even looking at other schools? Sounds to me like you’re a fair weather fan yourself.
