The No. 24 MSU men’s soccer team started the season with a bang with a 4-3 overtime victory at No. 6 Maryland on Friday night. The Terrapins were ranked as high as No. 3 in some polls.

MSU was awarded a 1-0 lead with a Maryland own goal in the 15th minute and took the lead into halftime.

The Spartans led the game 2-1 after a 57th-minute goal by junior forward Rubin Bega until Maryland midfielder Kaoru Forbess scored in the 88th minute.

In the 89th minute, Maryland took a 3-2 advantage after midfielder Doug Rodkey headed the ball past MSU senior goalkeeper Avery Steinlage.

MSU junior midfielder Brent Rosendall responded less than 10 seconds later with a goal to even the game at three goals apiece.

The Spartans won the game in overtime with a header by junior forward/midfielder Domenic Barone in the 95th minute.

Maryland dominated most of the statistics, including 22 shots to MSU’s seven.

From all accounts I’ve read so far, this sounds like one of the wildest soccer matches in MSU history! Great result too – could be a very special team!

I was at the game… Awesome finish! My friend graduated MSU with me in spring 2009 and was also at the game, but he wore a red soccer jersey and a U of Maryland hat (he’s currently a grad student there). Any comments on his treason are welcome.
