ASMSU considers "lip dub" video

October 26, 2010

The chorus of “Come Sail Away” by Styx could be heard drifting out of the ASMSU conference room during a Tuesday night meeting.

ASMSU is considering making a university-wide “lip dub,” a single-shot lip synch music video that has become a recent fad on YouTube.

The assembly watched a video Grand Valley State University posted in September, which had more than 600 people involved in the production, said Academic Assembly Chairman Justin Epstein.

“They spent more than five months planning it,” Epstein said. “The purpose is to promote the university, on-campus attractions, different student organizations.”

The meeting was a joint forum between Academic Assembly and Student Assembly.
ASMSU is MSU’s undergraduate student government.

Epstein said production costs of this type of video would be minimal because film equipment could be borrowed from MSU Telecasters or MSU Filmmakers Club.

“I’ve always had this issue with being creative,” mathematics senior Mario DiNocola said. “I would be willing to help out if the students decided they wanted to do it.”

Before the group makes any solid commitment, they should do some research into the feasibility of the project, said Student Assembly Chairman Chris Schotten.

“This would require the coordination of multiple different offices and departments across campus, not just different student groups,” Schotten said.

ASMSU also discussed its plan to have town hall meetings across campus to help engage students, said Academic Assembly internal vice chairman Zach Taylor.

The group is considering topics of discussion and potential locations including the International Center, the Union and Student Services, Taylor said.

Finance junior Sabrina Yap said the meetings would be a good way to get students interested in ASMSU.

“A lot of people have never even heard of us or what we do,” Yap said.

Also at the meeting, Taylor discussed his progress on the iClicker rental program, which he hopes to have up and running by spring semester.

As planned, students would be able to come to the ASMSU Business Office, put down a deposit and rent an iClicker for one or two semesters, Taylor said.

“We want to get it going in time for spring semester,” Taylor said.
