Gucci Mane to perform cancer benefit concert in E.L.

October 13, 2010

Gucci Mane poses in a studio for a press photo. Gucci Mane will be performing Friday at Chandler Field, 16800 Chandler Road, to help raise money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation, which promotes global efforts to end breast cancer.

If you’re a student living in a Chandler’s Village community and haven’t heard Gucci Mane perform live, you won’t be waiting too much longer.

The Sigma Nu Fraternity organized “Hip Hop For Hope 2K10,” featuring several artists including rapper Gucci Mane from 6:30-10 p.m. Friday on Chandler Field, 16800 Chandler Road.

Proceeds from the concert will go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, which promotes global efforts to end breast cancer. The Sigma Nu Fraternity was unable to approximate a certain amount that will end up being given to the foundation because factors, such as total costs and the amount of tickets sold, have yet to be determined.

Nic Bucca, an interdisciplinary studies in social science junior and social chairman of Sigma Nu, said Gucci Mane is one of hip hop’s finest.

“He’s hard hip hop,” Bucca said. “Right now, he’s probably one of the hottest rappers out there. He’s very popular
down in the South, so this is an event that a lot of people are looking forward to.”

“Hip Hop For Hope 2K10” also features performers GLC and G5 the Jett, along with other local performers. Gucci Mane, who recently debuted his latest CD “The Appeal: Georgia’s Most Wanted,” is set to begin performing at 8:45 p.m. and will rap for an hour.

Bucca said there will be tight security at the event, as well as a strict no-alcohol policy, as the show is an all-ages event.

Although the event brings a renowned artist to East Lansing, Bucca said giving back is the backbone of all of Sigma Nu’s philanthropy events.

“Philanthropy is huge with us,” Bucca said. “ We do something minimally every semester. Typically our philanthropy involves just a fraternity and a sorority, so you’ll maybe have 100 people or so. But now we’re extending on to that — this event could see three or 4,000 people.”

According to the event’s Facebook page, more than 2,500 guests are planning to attend the concert.

Ali Casemore, a social work sophomore planning to attend the event, said she likes Gucci Mane because of his unique sound.

“Gucci Mane’s music first caught my attention because he has a very distinct voice,” Casemore said. “I enjoy his singles, but my favorite songs of his are those that he took part in the making of a remix of another artist’s song.”

Casemore said his style fits her everyday mood.

“It’s the type of music I listen to all the time, and it’s also good for dancing too,” Casemore said.

The event will charge for on-site parking and also is offering both general admission and VIP tickets.

Brian French, who is helping organize the event through Real Management, said attendees should take advantage of the VIP tickets, which are being sold until midnight tonight.

“VIP tickets will get you into the fast track entrance without waiting in lines,” French said. “It also gets you prime viewing for the concert, separated from general admission.”

Casemore said she’s glad the event will help the fight against breast cancer, as the issue hits close to home.

“This is very important to me because it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month and my grandmother had and survived breast cancer,” Casemore said. “I’m glad to see Sigma Nu putting money towards such a great organization.”

Up until midnight tonight, VIP tickets will be available for $50 and general admission will be available for $30. Tickets purchased Friday will be $55 for VIP and $35 for general admission.
