Stabenow named head of U.S. Senate Agriculture committee

November 21, 2010

Michigan agriculture will see new muscle in Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., who announced Friday she will chair the U.S. Senate Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee in the coming term.

As chair, Stabenow will hold a lot of power in the renewal of the Farm Bill, which dictates the fate of funding and programs of the Department of Agriculture.

Stabenow will replace current chair Sen. Blanche Lincoln, D-Ark., who lost her re-election bid in the Nov. 2 general election.

In a statement, Stabenow said she is ready to lead the committee and work for a bipartisan Farm Bill.

“Agriculture is critical to Michigan’s economy, employing a quarter of our workforce,” Stabenow said. “Not only does agriculture create jobs and feed our families across America, but it is also helping us develop new fuels and energy sources.”
