History senior Amelia Hoffert’s vehicle and living complex show damage from a shooting that took place last night at Crossing Place, 3636 Coleman Rd.

The East Lansing Police Department is investigating a shooting that occurred early Saturday morning that killed a 20-year-old man from Detroit, according to a press release from ELPD.

Adrian House, a 20 year old from Detroit, was shot at about 1:15 a.m. this morning in the 1600 block of Abbot Road – which is between Saginaw Highway and Lake Lansing Road. Police said House was not an MSU student and they are unsure why House was in East Lansing.

Police from Bath Township and East Lansing responded to numerous calls about hearing gun shots, the release said. ELPD discovered a vehicle in the road in the 1600 block of Abbot Road and saw people running from the car.

There are currently no suspects.

Officers found House in the car and determined on-scene the cause of death was a result of the gunshot.

Witnesses said other vehicles, including the one the victim was in, were involved in a “confrontation” on the road.

East Lansing police Sgt. Scott Wriggelsworth said police have not determined whether the incident was a drive-by shooting or from where the bullets were shot.

Potential vehicles involved were described as a silver sedan, and a white SUV.

Police found House when they were responding to another incident in the 3600 block of Coleman Road. Officers received calls of alleged gun shots being fired.

Some residents at Crossing Place Apartments, 3636 Coleman Road, said one of the buildings was being shot at early Saturday morning. Several residents reported hearing gun shots, seeing police cars and one resident had her car windows shot out.

History senior Amelia Hoffert said her two of her car windows were destroyed after being shot by an unknown suspect. She said she was in her room when she thought she heard thunder, and was alerted her car had been damaged after her neighbors knocked on her door.

“No one notified me; the office didn’t notify me, the police didn’t notify me,” Hoffert said. “My neighbors had to notify me that my car had been shot by a gun and that our building was also shot.”

Hoffert said along with her car, parts of the building had been damaged.

Another resident of Crossing Place Apartments, English senior Laura Wiley, said she was coming back from a work party. She was told by police when she got to her apartment that she wasn’t allowed to go inside.

“It’s startling, it’s just unexpected,” she said.

Wiley said she knows some students who live in the complex that want to break their lease and don’t feel safe living there. Wiley’s roommate, advertising senior Ashley Lhota, said she is considering finding another place to live.

Lhota said there have been frequent and large parties at the complex, and the size of the gatherings has made her concerned. Lhota’s car, which was next to Hoffert’s, was dented by the impact of bullets. She said when she realized what was going on, she became overwhelmed.

“I realized it was Amelia (Hoffert’s) car and I almost started crying because we’re not involved in these parties and now I have a bullet dent in the side of my car,” she said. “I feel personally violated. I’m afraid.”

Managers of Crossing Place Apartments declined to comment on the incident.

It is not determined whether the incidents are related.

Anyone with information regarding the shootings can call the East Lansing Police Department tip line: (517) 337-2599 or 1-877-357-3847.

The shooting took place at Crossing Place apartments (right by Chandler’s Crossing). I heard the shots while in bed. I turned on the police scanner. They were saying it was AK-47 used in the shooting. The silver sedan was a Cadillac.

AK-47? yikes.

This what happens when you build places like Chandler and Crossing Place.

No, Chandler Crossings is a very safe place. It doesn’t matter what community you live in, there’s always a chance. Plus Ak-47’s and assault rifles are by far the least commonly used weapons in a crime, making this event extremely rare. This is probably related to drugs if anything.

Crossing Place is NOT safe. Maybe Chandlers, but Crossing Place has become a gross loud nothing but complete trouble this semester…. Sketchy people moved in…. And this whole thing was just a matter of time.

Looks like Wilbert got out just in time.

Point is this is what happens when you build cheap nationally managed residential areas. No one cares about community.

I live at Crossing Place and my building was pure chaos last night. I woke up to people running and shouting. Then I looked out my window and saw someone shooting a gun up in the air. Police arrived in a matter of minutes. They roped off my building and the one next door. My roommates and I didn’t go to bed until about 4:30am.

Happy Finals Week…hah.

Only the Landings are part of EL. The rest of the “Chandlers” are controlled by Bath Township. EL doesn’t control them and EL cops don’t police them unless Bath needs help.

So sad and this took place so close to Christmas. My heart goes out to his family and friends. I hope they catch whoever did this. Sometimes it is so hard living in this world, I just don’t get this stuff….

Yeah, sorry that the world isn’t revolving around you. I think the Police were a little busy looking for a guy with an AK-47. I know that every time I go near Crossing Place apartments its nothing but thug-town. Terrible.

Boon for Downtown EL: murders at Chandlers!!!!

There were two series of shootings. One at a vehicle on Abbot road and the other shooting up at the Croosings on Chandler, two separate but related shootings.

This will help bring students back to downtown East Lansing, and, therefore, there will be a huge demand for more overpriced and taxpayer funded apartments, for cronies and real estate insiders Krause, Kron, and Chappelle.

The City of East Lansing totally denies that they orchestrated the Northern Tier, but we all know that we are mostly likely to be pulled over, breathalyzed, car searched, harrassed, ticketed, and abused when driving up Abbot and on to Chandler and back, by CITY OF EAST LANSING COPS. Po po shut us down down.

Management SHOULD have notified about the car being shot out not to mention the rest of the people living in this ridiculous apartment complex. Getting out of the lease is the smartest thing anyone could do. It’s nothing but problems here.

The fact that most of the comments to this article dismisses the sad fact that a guy was shoot doesn’t surprise me. People are so selfish and concerned about themselves that they could careless about the young man, all they care about is the drama of the situation. Makes me sick. It doesn’t matter how dangerous a place is or isn’t, a person could have gotten shoot anywhere. It’s very sad for the male that did get shot.

Let’s take time a recognize the simple minded individual who said, “I thought eliminating AA would have curbed this type of behavior.” Clearly the police stated that House had no educational obligations tying him to MSU/LCC so was that comment really necessary?? Or were you just looking for attention?? Rude either way you look at it. I feel bad for the residents, and for the victim’s family.I hope they catch whoever is responsible for this.

No that comment was not necessary. What do you think he meant by I thought eliminating AA would curve “this” kind of thing? Do you think community colleges have AA?

You both are ignorant

@What? Thank you!!! If he had any affiliation with either they would have listed him as a student and not a “man/Detroit native.” AA is not responsible for violent acts. It doesn’t take a college education to know that

I live in the building where the shootings took place. I was long awaited though it may sound sad and my heart goes out to the boys family. The fact is that crossing place has gotten significantly worse since august because it definitely was not this way last year. If someone does not feel safe living somewhere that should give them just reason to be released from their lease. I can almost say with certainty that the homicide and the shootings at crossing place were related because the cars that were mentioned have been frequently seen at the complex. Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs of what occurred – however I was there and saw much of it from my window. Rude comments about the boy are completely unnecessary and it does not matter whether or not he was affialiated with MSU or LCC its still tragic and the least people can do is sympathize for the family.

Completely agree that it’s an awful tragedy, and I pray for the family.

And I live in crossing place – and can honestly say that since august I am terrified of going out of my apartment at night because of multiple times I’ve been approached, and all of the people who continue to drive through here. I understand it’s a college town and there will be parties .. But seriously – manament HAD to have seen this coming. All you have to do is walk around the buildings and you can hear, smell, see trouble waiting to happen.

If only we weren’t in a lease contract I would have packed up and left today… I shouldn’t have to fear walking to my car when I go out at night.

AND this “security” they have at the driveway currently is a JOKE. The people LIVE in the complex. So how are they keeping us safe??

I drove by when the “accused” were leaving. It was a green taurus and a white caddy, both sedans. The green taurus pulled out infront of me, and the white caddy almost hit my backend.

Ok, I live there as well. My building has not had the problems I have heard about, but this situation is quite unfortunate to hear of. I strongly agree that guns don’t kill people, people kill people. I think that the people that live there should be thankful that they didn’t get hurt or killed and should hope that others learn that this brings a negative light on our place of living. We have the same problems in Detroit and Flint, but we lay quick blame on the towns instead of the people that act out there actions and provide the negative lighting on their places of living. As for the car that was shot at, was it four hours later that you found out about your car because I bet your neighbors came up 30 min after it happened. On a lighter note when are we getting the hot tub back?? That’s what I signed up for.

I moved into Crossing Place in August of this year moved out within 2 weeks. That place was not for me!! This happens so much in the D and no one seems to care. R.I.P Adrian..!! My heart goes out to his family. Mothers are burying their sons too soon in Detroit. I didn’t know him, but I’m from Detroit and young guys have been dying in the streets for as long as I can remember. Hopefully E.L. police are able to find the shooter.

Someone’s comment said dumb ninjas… what’s that suppose to mean??? I’m glad someone replied to the idiot who thought AA would curb this. Wtf does that have to do with a shooting!?
