Four football players set to work out for NFL scouts at Combine

February 23, 2011

The NFL Scouting Combine kicked off Wednesday in Indianapolis and with players arriving, there are four former Spartans who will be working out for the NFL scouts. The Combine includes interviews, workouts, exams and other activities as scouts dissect every single prospect.

Linebacker Greg Jones, cornerback Chris L. Rucker, wide receiver Mark Dell and tight end Charlie Gannt are the four Spartans involved.

Last season, wide receiver Blair White was the only Spartan invited, and he went undrafted, while cornerback Jeremy Ware was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the seventh round.

This year, Blair White had 36 catches for 355 yards and five touchdowns for the Indianapolis Colts. Jeremy Ware had one tackle and one interception for the Raiders.

The Combine won’t make anyone a top-10 pick, but a solid performance by any of these players could move them up a round or so.

MSU also is scheduled to have its Pro Day on March 16, where scouts can see players go through the same workouts again.

Here are some pros and cons and my projection of where each player will go based on different projections I’ve seen:

Greg Jones
Pros: Jones will go down as one of the greatest linebackers in MSU history based on his instincts and his tenacity. Jones led the Spartans in tackling all four years.
Cons: For a linebacker, Jones is quite undersized and lacks the speed for pass coverage. Although Jones did intercept two passes this season, he often was beat by wide receivers and tight ends in coverage.
Jones won’t be able to blitz nearly as much as he did at MSU.
Projection: 2nd or 3rd round

Chris L. Rucker
Pros: Rucker has all the physical tools to be successful with his size, speed and strength. He was matched up with opponents’ top receivers for the past two seasons and did fairly well given how many times he was left on an island.
Cons: Unlike Jones, Rucker’s instincts have been his biggest problem. Sometimes his physical abilities overcame the issue in college, but that won’t cut it in the pros. He also has had some injuries.
Projection: 4th or 5th round

Charlie Gantt
Pros: Being a part of a pro-style offense at MSU, Gantt is a good run-and-pass blocker for a tight end. He also does a good job of route running and finding open holes in a zone defense to get open.
Cons: Gantt doesn’t have fantastic speed, especially when matched up against NFL linebackers or safeties. Tight end is a tough position to be a game changer, which means there won’t be many selected high, or at all.
Projection: 6th or 7th round

Mark Dell
Pros: Dell has good size for a receiver and can go up and grab a high pass.
He has the ability to catch a ball in coverage and take a hit.
He also can break tackles because of his size. Dell has good route-running ability.
Cons: Dell doesn’t have fantastic speed to blow by a defender or the agility to make a move on short routes.
Despite the size, Dell could improve his run-blocking ability.
Projection: 7th round or undrafted
