Gymnasts take second in New Hampshire

February 13, 2011

The MSU gymnastics team notched a season-high score of 193.425 at the UNH Invitational hosted by New Hampshire on Saturday.

The score earned the Spartans second place in the four-team competition. New Hampshire placed first with a score of 194.650.

Brown and Alaska-Anchorage were the other two schools competing.

Prior to the meet, senior Kelsey Morley emphasized focusing on the fundamentals rather than the scoreboard.

“We just need to go out and hit the gymnastics we know how to do and we know we’re capable of doing,” Morley said, “I think if we go and hit great routines for us individually, that it’s not going to matter if we get second or third, it’s going to matter that we did what we’re capable of.”

Morley finished fourth for the Spartans on the balance beam.

MSU sophomore Shanthi Teike also had a season-best mark with a score of 9.825 on the vault. Her performance was good enough for a second-place tie. Junior Jackie Berg also claimed a second-place finish for MSU on the uneven parallel bars.

The team returns to action 7 p.m. Friday at Ohio State.
