Senates approve short-term funding

March 2, 2011

A federal government shutdown likely was avoided Wednesday when the U.S. Senate approved a short-term funding measure that extends a previous budget deadline by two weeks.

The measure will be sent to President Barack Obama, who has until midnight Friday to approve it and avoid a shutdown. Numerous news organizations are reporting the president will sign the resolution.

The measure includes $4 billion in cuts to federal spending. The cuts target areas already proposed for elimination and some earmarks. At stake now is a much larger $61.5 billion spending cuts bill.

Experts are predicting a showdown between the Democratic Senate and Republican-dominated House on key spending issues that could have implications for student financial aid and university research funding.
