U.S. House passes budget extension

March 1, 2011

Congress moved a step closer toward avoiding a government shutdown later this week after the Republican-led U.S. House on Tuesday passed a short-term funding measure.

The resolution, which passed 335-91, would extend the Friday deadline for locking down a budget for the current fiscal year to March 18. The fiscal year will end in September.

The resolution now moves to the Senate, whose Democratic leaders have told various news outlets they will pass the measure. A bigger budget issue that likely will arise in the coming weeks will be arguments on a Republican proposal to trim $61.5 billion in federal spending for the current fiscal year.

MSU administrators have said they are wary of cuts to research funding and student financial aid should such deep cuts be passed.
