Representatives held a meet and greet at the International Center on Tuesday afternoon. The event gave representatives a chance to meet the new candidates, ASMSU spokesperson Elizabeth Brumfield said.
“The event is for representatives leaving ASMSU to meet the new representatives for the year who will be taking over their spots,” she said. “New representatives can also get to know possible colleagues for the upcoming session.”
Social relations and policy freshman Emily Bank is running to represent James Madison College. She said she was a member of the Freshman Class Council and knew she wanted to be involved with ASMSU.
“I have been a student council kid ever since I was in fifth grade,” she said. “I was the kid who found out what ASMSU was my junior year of high school.”
Running against an incumbent and an older student, Bank said her goal was to get her name out. If not elected, she plans on running again in the future.
“I love campaigning,” she said. “There are ideas that need to be heard.”
Ben Wernette is running for re-election for the Eli Broad College of Business. He said he came to the meet and greet to talk to new representatives.
“It’s a good time,” he said. “This will be an opportunity for the outgoing representatives to meet and help inform the representatives that are running for new election seats.”
Dan Dreliozis isn’t only running for re-election to represent the College of Engineering — he’s also running for the position of chairman of Funding Board.
“I think there’s only so far you can go as a representative,” he said. “I want to go a step further, especially with the organization facing all the financial freezes and administration. I want to have a hand in crafting the new ASMSU.”
Dreliozis said his goals for the next session of ASMSU are to streamline the group’s efforts.
“(I also want to) reduce animosity between the old Academic Assembly and Student Assembly,” he said. “They were at each other’s throats. I want to get rid of that altogether.”
Brumfield said events, such as the meet and greet, allow for a dialogue between new representatives and incumbents.
“The previous representatives can share their personal experiences and can illustrate the challenges and new experiences,” she said.
ASMSU elections run through April 11. Students can vote to elect representatives for the next session at studentelections.msu.edu.
