MSU employee killed in motorcycle crash

A 20-year-old male East Lansing resident and MSU employee died in a motorcycle crash at about 4:20 a.m. today on 1-96 in Livingston County, according to an article in the Detroit Free Press.

Carl Stamm, a Lansing Community College student and custodian at MSU, died after hitting a police car during a high speed chase, according to the article.

Two Livingston County deputies began pursuing Stamm after their radars clocked him driving more than 100 mph. During the chase, Stamm outran police cruisers whose top speeds were 127 mph.

Stamm collided with a Fowlerville, Mich., police officer’s car that pulled onto the highway to join the pursuit. The police officer was not injured, but Stamm was pronounced dead at the scene.

Westbound I-96 was closed just west of Fowlerville Road in Handy Township for about five hours following the accident.

The kid shouldn’t have been running, but the cops shouldn’t have been chasing him at those speeds. A thousand bucks says that the cop had him in view when pulling out in front of him. I hope that cop gets permanent desk duty, and I hope the kids family sues that department for a hundred million dollars.

A speeding motorcyclist is a danger to himself. If you don’t chase him, he won’t run. A speeding cop car is a danger to everyone around it, and the fact that these cops were allowed to pursue A MOTORCYCLE at those speeds shows a shocking level of reckless irresponsiblity for a police department. I hope that these cops and this department are dealt with severely.

You are kinda crazy Kyle. Where did you see this alleged video? Do you think if someone flees the cops the cops should just give up? The cops have rules for when to back off a suspect because it is too dangerous. Additionally the person was already traveling at dangerous speeds without cop intervention. Better that the man hit the back of a cop car than a minivan full of children.

@MSUSenior
It’s on other news sites. You are obviously an idiot, if you weren’t, then you wouldn’t realize how stupid you sound. The cop that cut him off was struck at more than 100mph, and the cop was unharmed. A 400 pound motorcycle is not going to detroy a 5,000 pound van – It’s simple physics. Furthermore, a van full of kids would not purposefully cut off a motorcycle at 4:30 am.

They should not have been chasing him, bottom line. They murdered this boy, and I hope these departments are sued out of existence. This is a crime against civilians, by a corrupt and out-of-control police force.

Apparently you missed the part where the guy was speeding and chose to run instead of pull over like you are supposed to do when you have a cop pulling you over. If the cops didn’t chase people, everyone would just keep on going when they get pulled over by the police. When people don’t pull over and try to run, it’s usually because they’re breaking some other law besides the speeding. The fact is, this would not have happened if he had pulled over instead of running. I DID watch the video on LSJ, and you could see the cop car ahead with flashing lights easily, from quite a distance. Had he not been going 150 MPH, he would have been able to miss it. What if it had been another vehicle – let’s say the minivan full of kids, WITHOUT flashing lights – that just pulled out onto the highway to get on the road? While the motorcycle might not be enough to total the vehicle, it would be enough to possibly send an unsuspecting and unprepared vehicle off the road, where it could then roll over.

Just because it was 4:30 in the morning doesn’t mean he was not endangering others. Any vehicle could have pulled out onto the highway and it would have been an ugly crash if he hit them.

I hear caps means he is mad and yelling. Take a deep breath and stop trolling.

I think it was poor judgment on both parties. He should not have been driving so fast, he should have pulled over, but the cop should not have pulled in front of him. The officer had to have known it would kill him. Bad choices were made all around. I feel so sorry for the family of this young man.

@MSUSenior

You know for a fact that I am not trolling, and you should know for a fact that I am RIGHT. I don’t get people’s need to call someone a “TROLL” when they don’t agree with them – You should stop that behavior, it makes you look like an IDIOT. See, I used big letters so you can read it.

I am not trying to justify the boy’s foolishness – I am POINTING OUT that the cops BLATANTLY MURDERED this kid, and for what? SPEEDING? ON AN EMPTY HIGHWAY AT 4:30 AM?

Fuck that.

It’s common knowledge among my friends with motorcycles that if you run, police will not chase you. 99% of the time, that is true. I don’t think this kid was breaking any other laws, but he simply thought he could outrun the police. No one knows what prompted these police to chase him, maybe it was their ego, maybe it was a slow night, but any way you look at it, it is their job to enforce the traffic laws. That, said I still expect a lawsuit in our @$$-backwards country.

If he was in a car speeding that cop would of never use his car to stop him.

The fact of the matter is that these cops decided to PURSUE in their THREE TON POLICE CRUISERS at ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY SEVEN MILES PER HOUR for a CIVIL INFRACTION, and subsequently MURDERED a 20 year old NON-CRIMINAL who was making a STUPID AND FOOLISH MISTAKE that dangered ONLY HIMSELF (and any deer that might have crossed his path).

Get it straight, people. These cops should be sued out of existence, and I really hope that happens.

Sorry Kyle, but there is no blame on the cops for this one. Many motorcyclists are recklessly irresponsible and think they can get away with anything. The cops had every right to pursue someone going 127mph …by all means he could have gotten off the highway and endangered even more people. A rear end collision is always the fault of the rear-ender. And if you are going that fast at 4:30 am you are really asking for it. No lawsuit here will hold up in court.

Its called natural selection boys & girls! The kid was stupid, had no value of human safetly & life. He was doing 100mph before he was observed by the cops. What if the cops ignored him, allowed him to continue @ 100mph, and he killed your family. Then you ilk speaking progressives would be after the cops. Its sad hes dead, but its a blessing.

Speeding at over 100 mph is not a civil infraction but reckless driving and a free trip directy to jail. The motorcyclist brought this unfortunate circumstance upon himself. Riders like this give all motorcycle rides a bad rap.

ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY SEVEN MILES PER HOUR for a CIVIL INFRACTION

Running from the police and going 60 mph over the limit is a civil infraction?

Yes, it is a civil infraction. Do you think it should be a felony?

And yes, you can go ‘directly to jail’ for civil infractions. You can go to jail for whatever the hell the police want – usually ‘disturbing the peace’ is their justification.

Yes I do believe that reckless driving should be a felony because you are putting others at a greater risk due to “your” stupid actions.

Since many of you are unwilling to take the approximately five minutes it would take to actually look it up, here’s the scoop: this would have been either considered careless driving, which is a civil infraction; reckless driving, which is a misdemeanor; or felony operation of a vehicle, which is, you guessed it, a felony.

In this case, it most likely would have been felony operation of a vehicle, or at the very least, reckless driving, because he showed wanton disregard for the safety of others. Plus, the officers might have suspected he was running due to the commision of another crime which could have been a felony. People who are only guilty of speeding don’t engage in a high-speed chase with the police.

So no, to use the stylistics of Kyle, THE COPS DIDN’T CHASE HIM AT 127 MPH JUST for a CIVIL INFRACTION.

Just because it was 4:30am DOES NOT MEAN he was only endangering himself. Anyone could have pulled out onto the highway at any point in time; it was the officers’ responsibility to stop him, prevent him from harming others. I don’t believe they intended to kill him by pulling out onto the highway, either. If you watch the video, he should have had plenty of time to switch lanes – there is no way the cop thought he was pulling out just in time to have the guy hit him. You could see the flashing lights up ahead literally hundreds of yards away.
