Sophomore thrower Beth Rohl was named Big Ten Field Athlete of the Year and Big Ten Field Athlete of the Championships after her performance at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships, the conference announced Wednesday. She also was given First Team All-Big Ten honors.
She is one of five members of the MSU track and field team to be honored following the conference championships, which concluded Sunday in Iowa City, Iowa.
At the championships, Rohl earned two Big Ten titles for her performances in the hammer throw and discus throw, and she is the first Spartan to be named athlete of the year and of the championships in either track or field. Her winning discus throw broke the school record with a 55.94-meter toss.
Joining Rohl with conference honors is senior runner Emily MacLeod, who earned her fifth All-Big Ten distinction between track and cross country. At the Big Ten Championships, MacLeod won the 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:09.10, winning the event by 2.91 seconds.
Junior jumper Becca Buchholtz earned First Team All-Big Ten honors after winning her second consecutive women’s high jump with a school record height of 1.82 meters. Freshman jumper Ashley Stacey was named Second Team All-Big Ten for her second-place finish in the women’s long jump, recording a 5.94-meter jump.
For the men’s track and field team, sophomore thrower Lonnie Pugh earned First Team All-Big Ten honors after taking home the first place title for the men’s discus throw. He posted a 53.81-meter toss for the championship, and it is his second All-Big Ten distinction.
