The MSU swimming and diving team will host the John Munley Long Course Memorial Swim Meet at 6 p.m. Saturday at IM Sports-West at the outdoor pool with the lanes arranged for long course meter competition.

The entry fee is $30 per person, and all proceeds and donations will benefit the John Munley Memorial Swimming Scholarship, which is presented to a member of the team who demonstrates outstanding competitiveness, dedication to the sport and loyalty to MSU.

The scholarship is in honor of John Munley, who swam at MSU from 1997 to 2001 and passed away on April 30, 2001 while jogging in East Lansing near campus.

During his time as a Spartan, Munley was named the team’s Most Valuable Swimmer in 1999 and 2000, and he set a then-varsity record in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:36.60.

In 2001, he qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 200-, 400- and 1,650-yard freestyle events, and he finished his career with four top-five finishes at the Big Ten Championships. He also qualified for the 2000 Olympic Trials in the 200-meter freestyle.
