Theta Chi failed city inspection prior to fire

November 2, 2011

Theta Chi fraternity house, which intentionally was set on fire early Friday morning during a party, did not pass a city inspection Sept. 29 partly because some fire alarms were missing.

The fraternity was in the process of addressing the 11 violations, including those for missing fire alarms, before the house caught fire, said Michael Lomonaco, a board member and Theta Chi alumnus.

The local Theta Chi chapter alumnus manage and own the property at 453 Abbot Road.

The deadline for fixing the violations was set for the next inspection, Oct. 31.

The house did not pass the Oct. 31 inspection.

Not all of the fire alarms had been replaced at the time of the fire, but it is unclear whether additional fire alarms were tampered with before the fire by either residents or outsiders, Lomonaco said.

The fire is under investigation.
