East Lansing mayor should support equity

As one of the few cities in Michigan with a nondiscrimination ordinance protecting gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation, East Lansing is a front-runner in our state in the fight against hate. That’s why I, and every other lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered resident of East Lansing, would appreciate beyond words if Mayor Diane Goddeeris joined the Mayors for the Freedom to Marry campaign.

Currently, more than 70 mayors throughout the country have signed on, including four in Michigan: Grand Rapids Mayor George Heartwell, Ann Arbor Mayor John Hieftje, Hamtramck Mayor Karen Majewski and Kalamazoo Mayor Bobby Hopewell.

The concept of the campaign is to show President Obama that mayors from every city — from big to small — support marriage equality in our country, and it’s evident that East Lansing already tries to do so to the extent of Michigan law. Mayor Goddeeris, please consider signing the pledge. It would mean the world to me, other residents of East Lansing and to everyone in this state who is cringing at the current actions of our state’s Legislature. Thank you.

Matthew Trecha, East Lansing resident
