Penn State defeats MSU wrestling team in weekend matchup

January 8, 2012

In its first look at competition in three weeks, the MSU wrestling team was routed by No. 4 Penn State 36-6 at the Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek, Mich.

The only points of the day for the Spartans (2-3 overall, 0-2 Big Ten) came when Nittany Lion Nico Megaludis was disqualified for using an illegal move on senior 125-pounder Eric Olanowski, awarding six points to MSU.

No. 18 junior 149-pounder Dan Osterman and senior 165-pounder David Cheza both got the opportunity to compete against the best wrestler in the nation at their respective weights. Osterman lost a 9-3 decision to No. 1 Frank Molinaro while Cheza fell in a major decision, 13-5, to No. 1 David Taylor.

The Spartans will return to the mat Friday when they take a break from conference play to face West Virginia at Jenison Field House. The Spartans had the chance to see the Mountaineers in action at the Reno Tournament of Champions on Dec. 18, in which the Spartans placed fifth overall and West Virginia came in seventh.
