Trustees build with student needs in mind

If the MSU Board of Trustees vote today to proceed with certain projects on campus, students can expect to see a variety of improvements over the next few years.

The board will be voting on the plan to build an engagement center in McDonel Hall, which would be much like the centers in Brody and Hubbard halls that have been renovated during the past few years.

They also are expected to vote on renovations to the Union’s first floor, construction of the Facility of Rare Isotope Beams, or FRIB, and the proposed Spartan Stadium scoreboards.

All of these plans cover a variety of things across campus. Some might be a bigger benefit than others, but all of these renovations would make MSU a better institution for students.

For example, the Union is a common place for students to get homework and studying done. Many students utilize the space, especially the lounge areas on the first floor.

In a past interview with The State News, Kat Cooper, communication manager for Auxiliary Resources, said parts of the first floor of the Union have needed renovations since the 1990s. Finally addressing those renovations allows students a more appealing place to study.

The McDonel lounge project is budgeted for $5.5 million, with funding coming from the Residential and Hospitality Services and the university general fund. Although this project would be coming from student’s tuition money, it would be a change students could take advantage of.

The lounge could be a place to students to go and hangout with their each other, or offer a place to go and study. Similar renovations in Brody and Hubbard halls have been well-received by students.

As for the scoreboard in Spartan Stadium, it appears to be something that really draws in students. The funding for the scoreboard would not come out of students’ pockets, unless students pay for season tickets. If that’s the case, students get to enjoy what they paid for: a new main scoreboard and two scoreboards with a “ribbon panel” at the north end of the stadium.

A new and improved scoreboard would be something to upgrade the stadium and make it more attractive to students and fans travelling in for football games and recruits.

Football plays a big part in students’ lives at MSU, and a new scoreboard could make that experience more enjoyable.

Although the FRIB project, on first glance doesn’t have as direct of an effect on students’ lives as the new lounges or scoreboard would, it would be of a major benefit to the university. It could put MSU ahead of the curve in research capabilities and help the Department of Energy Office of Science — which is funding the project — make new advancements in the field of particle acceleration.

Students’ needs and wants are what tie all of the Board of Trustees’ projects together. Students want a better football experience, so MSU is looking into building a new scoreboard. The Union has needed renovations for some time, so MSU is upgrading the first floor to make the area more appealing to students. Many students live in dorms, so MSU gradually is making them into more interesting living spaces.

All this combines to make current students comfortable at MSU.
