The MSU wrestling team’s struggles continued this weekend, as the Spartans dropped both duals during their road trips to No. 18 Northwestern and No. 6 Illinois.
On Friday, the Spartans (3-6 overall, 1-4 Big Ten) lost a 30-12 battle against the Wildcats, which was highlighted by senior 174-pounder Curran Jacobs’ upset 3-1 decision over No. 11 Lee Munster.
Freshman 141-pounder Brian Gibbs, senior 184-pounder Ian Hinton and redshirt freshman 197-pounder Nick McDiarmid also recorded individual victories in the dual. No. 13 senior 157-pounder Anthony Jones Jr. dropped a 6-3 decision to No. 3 Jason Welch, and No. 10 sophomore heavyweight Michael McClure fell in a 3-1 decision against No. 17 Mike McMullan.
Sunday afternoon, the Spartans faced off against Illinois, dropping the dual by a score of 26-13. Junior 149-pounder Dan Osterman came out of his slump to pin Eric Terrazas at the 30 second mark, and Jones recorded a 16-5 major decision over Jackson Morse in the 157 pound division.
Jacobs notched his second upset win of the weekend with a 7-3 decision over No. 10 Jordan Blanton of Illinois, rounding out the individual winners for the Spartans.
MSU will be back in action this weekend when it hosts No. 7 Nebraska at Jenison Field House on Friday before the Spartans travel to Ann Arbor on Sunday for a dual against its in-state rival, No. 10 Michigan.
