Although they left Edinboro, Penn., without a win, the Spartan wrestlers continued to show improvement in their 18-15 dual loss to the No. 20 Fighting Scots and in their individual performances in the Edinboro Open on Saturday.

No. 16 senior 174-pounder Curran Jacobs, No. 10 senior Anthony Jones Jr., sophomore 125-pounder Brenan Lyon, senior 165-pounder David Cheza and senior 184-pounder Ian Hinton all recorded wins for the Spartans in a losing effort.

It came down to the final seconds in the final match between heavyweights sophomore Mike McClure and Edinboro’s Ernest James. Tied at 1-1, James recorded a takedown in the final 15 seconds of the third period, which gave him a 3-1 lead and the Fighting Scots the victory.

MSU did not have time to dwell on the loss, as they returned to action Saturday morning for the Edinboro Open.

In the tournament, senior 125-pounder Eric Olanowski, redshirt freshman 157-pounder Ryan Watts and Hinton all placed second in their individual decisions, leading the way for MSU. Redshirt freshman 197-pounder Nick McDiarmid and junior heavyweight Steve Andrus also placed third in their respective classes.
