Playboy looks to show off student body

March 20, 2012

Playboy Magazine set up a simulation of an audition for the media. MSU sophomore with the modeling name Marla Marie participated in the casting call today. Marie talks about her preparation for casting call and relays her experience in her actual audition.

An MSU sophomore with the modeling name Marla Marie fluffed her shoulder-length brown hair, pouted her lips and posed seductively as Playboy Magazine photographer Matt Wagemann snapped shots with his camera Tuesday afternoon.

The student was one of about 50 women auditioning for Playboy Magazine’s October 2012 Girls of the Big Ten pictorial. Representatives from the magazine held the casting call Tuesday and auditions are scheduled to continue today.

Marie said it always has been her dream to pose in Playboy Magazine, and she imagines many women have had similar dreams when they see such magazines.

“I feel like it will be a liberating thing for me,” she said of the opportunity to potentially be featured in the magazine. “I think it will give me a lot of confidence and help me get over a lot of insecurities.”

Playboy producer Eden Orfanos, who is running the casting call in East Lansing, said the magazine only will choose about two to six women to pose in the MSU section for the issue, depending on if the magazine chooses to use a group photo shoot or an individual shoot.

The magazine already has visited other Big Ten schools such as Ohio State University and the University of Michigan and plans to wrap up its Big Ten college tour at the beginning of April, Orfanos said.

She said of the schools she’s visited recently, MSU seems the most promising, and she loves the energy of the women who have auditioned so far.

“We are looking for girls who aren’t produced, who are here to get an education,” Orfanos said. “It is very different from getting a model from Miami or Los Angeles — we’re actually getting college students.”

Media and information junior Lucas Polito said he has not seen any of the past “Girls of the Big Ten” pictorials Playboy Magazine has released, but he does not have a problem with fellow Spartans posing in the photos.

“It’s better than them doing straight pornography,” Polito said. “Playboy’s a little bit classier in a way.”

Marie said when she was going through the audition process she was a bit nervous, and she felt she would be more comfortable once she had her clothes off and was posing in front of the camera.

When she was in the room being shot, she said she tried to remember all of the research she had done on past Playboy photo shoots.

“I was thinking about how I can be innocent and flirty at the same time, while still being really sexy,” she said.

Marie said although she is nervous about how her friends and family will react to her auditioning and potentially representing MSU in the magazine, she could not pass up an opportunity to have her name associated with such a big brand.

“It would be a dream come true, an absolute dream come true,” she said. “You only have one life — it’s your life so you’ve got to live it.”
