Solo Cup Company sold to Mason-based Dart Container Co.

March 25, 2012

Solo Cup Company recently was bought out by Dart Container Corporation, which is based in Mason, Mich., for about $315 million.

Dart Container Corporation also will take on $700 million in debt from Solo Cup Company.

Both companies are committed to being environmentally friendly, representatives said. Dart is one of the largest producers of foam cups, which require less energy to produce than plastic cups. Solo also offers many environmentally friendly disposable products, such as drink and food containers made out of paper, plastic and recycled materials.

“We believe that environmental sustainability is an important factor in our collective future success,” Director of Communications for Solo Cup Company Angie Gorman said in an email. “Solo will contribute complementary product lines to Dart’s product portfolio – especially in paper, consumer products and environmentally preferable products.”

Vice President of Administration and General Counsel for Dart Container Corporation Jim Lammers said he strongly feels Dart’s products are environmentally friendly, and the addition of Solo’s paper products, which is a material Dart does not use, will be a positive addition to the company.

“By having a much broader line we will be able to provide our customers with a variety of products,” Lammers said.

Lammers also expects the addition of Solo cups to the Dart Corporation will bring some growth in employment, but it is hard to know for sure at this point in time.

Red Solo cups are known for being used in many drinking games, including beer pong and flip cup, but MSU students such as chemistry freshman Ronjini Hassan also use them as drinking cups, among other uses.

“I use them all the time, not just for social stuff,” Hassan said. “I live in the dorms, they are not just for at home.”

Gorman said MSU students still will be able to purchase Solo products because Dart will continue to manufacture red Solo cups under the Solo brand.
