Report: Nix conceded to possession of marijuana

April 9, 2012

MSU basketball player Derrick Nix admitted to smoking a marijuana joint prior to a traffic stop at 12:20 a.m. April 3, according to an incident report obtained from the East Lansing Police Department by The State News.

Nix was stopped by police after making a left-hand turn during a red light at the corner of Lake Lansing and Abbot roads. Records show police smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle at the time of Nix’s arrest, and his eyes were bloodshot. A 0.6-gram blunt of marijuana was found in the car’s visor. Nix later tested positive for marijuana in a blood test.

The police administered three sobriety tests during the stop, and Nix failed them all. According to police records, he failed to maintain balance while walking in a straight line, skipped numbers while counting backward and failed to balance while standing on one leg. Nix was arrested for operating a vehicle in the presence of drugs and for possession of marijuana — both are misdemeanor charges.

Eric Nix, Derrick’s brother, posted a $200 cash bond on April 3 to release the junior center from custody.

According to police records, this was not the first encounter Nix has had with police.

Since June 2009, Nix has had four civil infractions and one other misdemeanor charge, all traffic related.

In November 2011, Nix was taken into custody for driving on a suspended license and disobeying a traffic signal. Nix was released on a $200 bond posted by Draymond Green on Dec. 1, 2011, and eventually admitted responsibility and paid $150 in fines.

Last week, head coach Tom Izzo released a statement stating Nix’s position on the team is uncertain, and he has been suspended indefinitely.

Athletics Department officials declined further comment until further legal action is taken.

Last Friday, Nix waived his right to an arraignment, and no date has been set for Nix to appear in court.
