Recruits earn honors
Two of Suzy Merchant’s recruits have picked picked up considerable honors in recent days.
Friday, 6-foot-7 center Madison Williams (Detroit Country Day) was named Gatorade Michigan Player of the Year, the first MSU recruit to win the award since Allyssa DeHaan in 2005-06.
Williams, who also was named a McDonald’s All-American, is averaging 12 points, 10.2 rebounds and 9.1 blocks this season, helping her team to a 22-0 record and a spot in the Class B quarterfinals Tuesday.
Monday, East Lansing forward Klarissa Bell was named Michigan’s Miss Basketball by the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan and the Detroit Free Press.
Bell is averaging 21 points and nine rebounds this season and her team will play Rockford in a Class A quarterfinal Tuesday.
Fellow incoming Spartan Annalise Pickrel of Grand Rapids Catholic finished second in the Miss Basketball voting while Williams finished fourth.
