Summer blockbusters an eclectic mix

If you haven’t heard yet, the second X-Files movie has a title. It’s officially “The X-Files: I Want to Believe.”

You might be saying to yourself, “There’s another X-Files movie coming out?” That’s just one sign we’re about to hit the mother load of summer movies.

While last year was the year of the third movie, this year’s crop of summer fare is an eclectic mix.

Starting the summer off, we have either “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” or “Iron Man” if you feel “Forgetting” isn’t quite a summer movie. Already the airwaves are being bombarded by ads for the two, a sure sign summer is upon us, even if school and the weather haven’t quite realized that fact.

By the end of the summer, we will have returned to Gotham, seen Indiana Jones break his whip out of storage and watched the Wachowskis try to craft an entire movie about a kid who can drive really fast.

Some of it should be good, a lot of it will be crap, but odds are that given the large range of movies out there, we’ll all be entertained.

As for me, I’ll be in line opening day for pretty much all of them. I have some weird compulsion that I must see all the big summer movies, whether good or bad, although I will be avoiding that Patrick Dempsey vehicle coming out in May unless I’m dragged to it.

The point of all this is that we should be grateful for the variety that’s available to all of us. There’s got to be at least one movie that’ll appeal to you.

As Roger Ebert says, I’ll see you at the movies.
