Old movies better than new in terms of cost
A quick browsing of this summer’s movie trailers at www.apple.com/trailers shows some interesting movies hitting theaters this summer.
But for MSU students with limited budgets like me, the trailers are about as much of these movies I’ll see.
The cost of movies is way too much. A matinee can be as cheap as $5, but that’s for extremely rare occasions because who wants to sit inside in the dark on a nice summer afternoon?
So for students hoping to relax after work or class without the cash to hit the bars, my suggestion is to rediscover your movie collection (or your roommate’s, in my case).
The other day, I dug deep into our movie-rich dresser drawer and pulled out Tim Meadows’ “The Ladies Man.” This movie came out a while ago, but who doesn’t at least smirk when Leon Phelps says “Ooo, it’s a lady.”
There are also lot of good, random movies you’ve seen and others you’ve never heard of. Find DVDs you haven’t seen before. For instance, the next night I watched “25th Hour,” which ended up having a lot of big names in it and, despite its overly drawn ending, was an OK movie.
And trust your instincts for movies you haven’t seen before. Usually, I just by look at a DVD cover and the actors in it and quickly assess what type of movie I think it is. Steve Carell in “Little Miss Sunshine,” might be funny, but Steve Carell in “Evan Almighty” is probably not.
My gut instinct has never led me to watch a really bad movie. (Val Kilmer’s “The Saint” was below par).
This is my point for the frugal movie buff: Instead of watching “Wedding Crashers” for the 100th time, think outside the box and watch something you haven’t seen in a while. And don’t be afraid to try something new.
