Summer reveals more to enjoy in East Lansing

By: Allison Bush Posted: 08/07/08 9:17pm

If anybody’s been complaining about the lack of things to do in East Lansing over the summer, they’ve been walking around with their eyes shut.

This is the first summer I’ve stayed in East Lansing, and I’ve been really surprised by the amount of things the city has to offer its residents — there was the Art Festival in May, the Summer Solstice Jazz Festival in June and this weekend is the Great Lakes Folk Festival, which I personally am the most excited about.

Walking leisurely through the city, listening to folk music playing on different stages for three full days sounds like my idea of a relaxing way to spend the weekend.

And apparently, not only will there be music, but there will be art and workshops available, as well.

In my hometown of Rochester, Mich., we have about two festivals — one for Labor Day weekend and one for Memorial Day weekend. Neither of them involve music.

It proves that this city is more than just a college town in that there are such large events during the summer when the majority of students aren’t around.

For most of my three years here, I’ve spent my time so wrapped up in things around campus that it’s taken me until this summer to realize — this city is pretty cool.

You may also check out festivals, with music, throughout the summer in downtown and Old Town, Lansing.

Summer is definitely the best time to be in East Lansing. During the school year, it feels like EL is hosting 40,000 guests. It’s fun, but it’s great when they go home. The summer is relaxed and there are lots of outdoor activities, like Allison Bush pointed out. In addition to the Art Festival, the Jazz Festival, and the Great Lakes Folk Festival, there’s live music at the Ann Street Plaza every Friday and Saturday evening, there are outdoor movies on Thursdays at Valley Court, there’s a series of outdoor plays along the Red Cedar River, and there are plenty of other assorted events to enjoy.

It’s great the EL has some festivals and things to do during the summer. When you leave EL, definitely consider coming to Minneapolis I did in 2002 and love it! Festivals EVERY WEEKEND in the summer with music and art. More public companies per capita than any other city in the US, consistently ranked as a best place to live by media and residents, low crime rate and an unemployment rate that runs about 1% below the national average. It’s great!

This article makes me miss East Lansing very much. I moved to State College (home of Penn State) in 2004, and this place cannot compare to East Lansing. I am so glad that I knew how special Michigan was while I was living and studying in East Lansing, so I explored as much as I could of what Michigan, Lansing, Okemos, Owosso, East Lansing, Williamston, Holt, Grand Ledge, Eaton Rapids, and Mason have to offer.
