New MSU logo throws away tradition, weakens brand
I know I’m not the only one who saw the new MSU Spartans helmet logo and asked what in the world the university was thinking.
The logo, reported to be unveiled in April, can be summarized in one word — ugly. I hate to be too cliché, but MSU, if it ain’t broke, please don’t fix it.
The MSU Spartans helmet is a powerful, internationally recognized brand. It sets us apart from the myriad of other schools who utilize some sort of block ‘S’.
Not to mention that redesigns are expensive. Think of all the letterheads, business cards, uniforms, and existing branding that will need to be changed before everyone is on the same page and using the new Spartans helmet. Rumor has it that MSU worked with Nike’s top designers on this project, and if that’s true, you know they forked over a pretty chunk of change. Should we really be spending money on an ugly redesign when entire programs are facing cuts?
There’s also the problem of inconsistency. Maybe the university has a great plan to unite all the different factions of campus life through this new brand. Maybe. But it’s going to take time. If the switch to the new logo isn’t made mandatory, effective immediately come April, the old logo could be around for a long time.
People will continue to use the old one on their business cards, promotional T-shirts, and letterheads until they have to reorder those products. It could take years for the new helmet to completely take the place of the old one on campus.
Did I mention I think the redesign is ugly? The curves seem childish, and the shape is just not as appealing as the strong lines and simple curves of the Spartans helmet we all know and love.
I’m sure there are plenty of people who will disagree as to which logo is more aesthetically pleasing, and that’s fine. My main gripe is that I think MSU could allocate its resources toward something other than a redesign of a successful brand.

The new logo … ICK is the most polite thing that comes to mind.
I should probably stock up on shirts etc. with the current helmet.
Will the “total presentation” include changing the block S too?

I vehemently agree with the 84% of respondents who still have a sense of tradition – the new logo is a huge step backwards. Why would anyone think they can improve the best logo in sports? I will never buy any item with the new logo. Hopefully someone will come to their senses, kick Nike off campus, and stay true to our cherished legacy.

i would hope that with the poll results how they are, and with as many people joining the facebook group, that they can’t honestly change it now. if they do, they are just going upset a lot of people, not to mention all of the alumni that haven’t heard about it yet.

That thing is hideous. Stupid, stupid move.
The only good thing about the new logo is that there is likely to be some cheap “old logo” items for sale come this Spring. As my entire man-cave basement is decked out in MSU propaganda, this alumnus will gladly buy the old logo stuff at (hopefully) fire sale prices. Let’s hope this becomes reality, because I damn sure won’t be buying anything with that new abomination on it…

I, for one, am in favor of this logo change. I think the new logo is just gonna take some time to get used to. MSU hasn’t always taken to change so well, but give it time. The new logo will not only provide MSU with a single, recognizable symbol but brings new energy to a logo that reminds me of going to a elegant dinner party rather than going to compete on the field. Give it some time MSU and stay true to Lou Anna K. Simon’s mission of advancing MSU!

All I can hope for is that this mlive article is correct in guessing that it will only be an additional 3rd jersey option, similar to the throwback jersey in the NFL.

Unbelievable. Even the patent office staff had to wonder about the logic of this decision.

I cannot express my level of disappointment with this decision. The fact that our administrators felt this was responsible spending given the current economic conditions boggles my mind. Not to mention that they’re messing with tradition here, which is only going to upset a LOT of people, including the many alumni with deep pockets.
Way to go MSU, way to go.

I understand that most all of us don’t like the new logo. However what a lot of you don’t realize is Nike helped create this logo. In doing that, Nike and MSU will most likely come together and create the new Nike combat uniforms.. which if you haven’t noticed there sweet!! All and all the football program will take a hit on the logo but with the new uniforms everybody will end up forgetting all of this.

Not a fan of the new logo. The fact that Nike is behind this to some degree certainly does not make me like it more. This isn’t Oregon. This is Michigan. The administration needs to embrace Michigan. We’re old school. We’re not some hippy dippy do Left Coast suckers. We don’t do branding schemes. We don’t do gimmicks. We’re America’s premier land grant institution. We should stick with tradition— the traditional block S and helmet. As many have said, it wasn’t broke and it doesn’t need fixing.

When Nike (i.e. Money) talks, MSU listens. What will be next? The Tigers’ Olde English D, the Red Wings winged wheel, that other school’s block M. I guess tradition isn’t important at MSU.

As an alum I do not like this logo(new). I wouldn’t think of contributing to a school with a logo as weak as this. I hope Nike has alot of money coming to MSU as a result of this because there won’t be any coming from me if this ugly thing is promoted as Spartan pride and toughness.

Weaken brand identity is right. Who would buy anything with a logo like that? Nike and MSU will not realize increased product sales…more like a decreased in brand loyalty. Hollis, you have had a lot of big hits here at MSU, this is not one of them.

If they are working with Nike then things make perfect sense. As an MSU alum living in Oregon, home of Nike, we’ve seen our share of Oregon Duck gear. As I am not a fan of the Pac-10, it seems the Oregon Ducks have a new, uniform almost every time they take the field. My opinion, is that the Ducks are constantly looking for an identity. MSU has an identity and it looks and works just fine.
