Franzen is good; new HNIC theme

I love Johan Franzen.

How can you not like his rugged style, soft hands and, as evident last night, his absolute laser shot.

My jaw dropped when I saw Franzen’s snapshot from the circle blow over Martin Gerber’s left shoulder. It was probably one of the coolest shots I’ve seen in a while.

Franzen is another example of the type of player the Red Wings continually come up with. With two goals in Saturday’s win against Ottawa, he appears to be well on his way to continuing what he did in the final month of last year’s regular season and playoffs.

His size is his biggest asset, but if he keeps sniping goaltenders like that and getting garbage goals in front of the net, he’ll easily eclipse the 35 goal plateau this season.

Around the league, “Hockey Night in Canada” has a new theme song and I like it.

After the CBC lost the rights to “The Hockey Theme,” the show’s trademark music, they decided to hold a contest.

Nearly 15,000 anthems were entered and the winner was “Canadian Gold,” composed by Colin Oberst of Alberta.

While I liked the song in the voting process, I was skeptical of it when played over the sample video. All my fears were calmed when I saw it played over the awesome new video the network has produced. The video really plays to the history of the game and HNIC. Check it out here (be forewarned, the quality doesn’t do it justice.)

The second game on HNIC on Saturday between Calgary and Vancouver was really intense.

There were some excellent fights, hard hits and some up-and-down hockey that ended in Pavol Demitra scored the winning goal in overtime, although it came after a very questionable no-call on a trip by Vancouver.

Let me put it this way: You’ll never see that kind of intensity in the second game of the NBA season. That’s what makes hockey great.

Right you are Mr. Bishop, I don’t think you see that kind of intensity in the NBA ever!
