By: Joseph Terry Posted: 04/30/09 9:19pm

MSU women’s basketball coach Suzy Merchant was named as an assistant coach for USA Basketball for the 2009 USA World University Games, to be held this summer in Belgrade, Serbia.

The World University Games is a multi-sport competition organized by the International University Sports Federation and held every other year. Eligible athletes for the USA team must be currently enrolled in a college or university and have remaining NCAA athletic eligibility.

Merchant is coming off her second season at MSU. She led the Spartans to their first berth in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2006, and has a coaching record of 45-25 at MSU and a 246-145 record in her career.

Leading the Team USA staff will be Arizona State head coach Charli Turner Thorne. Pepperdine head coach Julie Rousseau will also be an assistant coach.
