Big Ten Power Rankings #1

By: Cash Kruth and Jacob Carpenter Posted: 09/29/08 7:04pm

Football reporters Cash Kruth and Jacob Carpenter begin their weekly installment of Big Ten power rankings:

Cash’s rankings:
1. Penn State (5-0, 1-0)
2. Ohio State (4-1, 1-0)
3. MSU (4-1, 1-0)
4. Wisconsin (3-1, 0-1)
5. Illinois (2-2, 0-1)
6. Purdue (2-2, 0-0)
7. Michigan (2-2, 1-0)
8. Northwestern (5-0, 1-0)
9. Minnesota (4-1, 0-1)
10. Iowa (3-2, 0-1)
11. Indiana (2-2, 0-1)

Penn State is easily the class of the Big Ten, proving it with a 38-24 win over Illinois. MSU and Wisconsin are inter-changeable, but MSU gets the edge. Both the Spartans and Badgers played terrible, but MSU was able to overcome its mistakes on the road, while Wisconsin wasn’t. Ranking Purdue ahead of U-M may draw head scratches, but if you put the two teams head-to-head I believe the Boilermakers would come out on top.

Jacob’s rankings:
1. Penn State
2. Ohio State
3. Wisconsin
4. Michigan State
5. Illinois
6. Michigan
7. Northwestern
8. Purdue
9. Minnesota
10. Iowa
11. Indiana

Penn State’s impressive win over Illinois puts them atop the first power rankings in front of Ohio State, who has yet to have a convincing victory over a decent team. Wisconsin stays ahead of MSU despite their loss because the two teams resemble each other so much and Wisconsin makes fewer mental errors. Purdue lands in the bottom half, despite not having played a conference game this year.

SNews got it wrong……again. OSU is 4-1 not 5-0. Great reporting!

No respect for Northwestern? They are 5-0 (yes, against bad teams. I know) and they beat our butts last year. If you think MSU is a lock to win any game this year, you are an idiot. Each game will be close.

Matt, that was last year, they had our number for embarrassing them on their homecoming with that “Greatest comeback in NCAA history” thing. We’ll see what happens to Northwestern in a week from Saturday.

On top of that B. Hoy felt the need to throw 4 touchdown passes instead of simply going for the first down on the final OT. They did not “beat our butts”, we lost that game.

OSU…where do you see 5-0…I see that under PSU, not OSU. They DO have OSU as 4-1. Great oversight! Don’t get me wrong, I see a lot over errors on a daily basis, but check your figures before you judge.

Hey nice job OSU. I bet you feel like an ass!

Way off. Don’t be so easily influenced by a mid-season loss. Ohio State is still the best, no doubt about it. A loss to USC is nothing like losing to UofM or Cal. Here’s what it should look like:

1. Ohio State
2. Penn State
3. Wisconsin
4. Michigan State
5. Northwestern (they are for real this year!)
6. Illinois
7. Michigan
8. Minnesota
9. Purdue
10. Iowa
11. Indiana

I live in columbus and OSU is a fake…if he were real he would call himself THEOSU….and they are at least number 2…and having MSU in the top 4 is not bad usually bby this time I’m looking forward to basketball…not this year!!!

This is how the big-ten rankings should be and will most likely be by the end of the 2008-2009 season. Might i remind those who do not agree with my conference standings that this is not based on current wins and losses. It is based on how well conference teams have appeared thus far.

1) Penn State
2) Ohio State
3) Wisconsin
4) Illinois
5) Northwestern
6) Michigan State
7) Michigan
8) Minnesota
9) Iowa
10)Purdue
11)Indiana
