Junior linebacker Greg Jones was named the Big Ten’s preseason Defensive Player of the Year on Monday at Big Ten Media Day in Chicago.
Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor was named the league’s preseason Offensive Player of the Year.
Jones is coming off a sophomore season in which he racked up a team-leading 127 tackles, including 14 for loss.
The Spartans were picked to finish third in the conference behind Ohio State and Penn State, two teams to which the Spartans lost last season.
MSU is coming off a 9-4 season with wins against Michigan, Wisconsin and Notre Dame. The Spartans reached a New Year’s Day bowl game for the first time since 2000, falling to Georgia in the Capital One Bowl. The team finished at No. 24 in the final Associated Press Top 25 poll.
