Franklin Gomez’s quest for back-to-back NCAA national championships ended Friday evening when the 133-pound senior lost, 5-3, in overtime to Iowa’s Daniel Dennis in the national semifinals in Omaha, Neb.

Gomez will wrestle Oklahoma’s Jordan Oliver on Saturday in the third-place match.

After a scoreless first period, Dennis opened the second period with a one-point escape. Eight seconds later, Gomez countered with a two-point takedown to take the lead. Dennis escaped, tying the match at two, and Gomez was hit with his second stalling call to give Dennis a point. Gomez got the point back and tied the match at three in the third period.

Twenty seconds into overtime, Dennis got a takedown for the win.

Anthony Jones Jr., a 157-pound junior, also saw his tournament run end with a 6-3 loss to Penn State’s Cyler Sanderson.
